Florida's gopher tortoise just received troubling news 😥

The International Union for Conservation of Nature has reclassified the gopher tortoise as critically endangered, citing decades of population declines driven largely by habitat loss. Florida, home to one of the species' largest remaining populations, was singled out as an area where numbers have fallen significantly since the 1960s.

Known as a keystone species, gopher tortoises dig burrows that provide shelter for more than 350 other kinds of animals. While the reptiles are protected under state law, conservation experts say preserving and restoring their habitat will be critical to their long-term survival.

To celebrate, we're spotlighting one of our favorite animals, the Virginia Opossum!
Virginia Opossums are North America's only native marsupial, and have a lot of really cool features. Coincidentally, a couple of these match up with the numbers on the American Flag! Opossums have 50 teeth, which is the most of any land mammal in North America. They also have 13 ni***es, meaning they can nurse up to 13 babies in their pouch at a time! These awesome animals also have prehensile tails, which they use for balance to climb.🐾
Despite their appearance and amount of teeth, opossums are great to have around in our communities! They are not succeptible to the rabies virus, and are commonly known to eat ticks and other pests. 🐍
Celebrate our awesome opossums today, and remember to keep our wildlife in mind during your celebrations by choosing less impactful options like light shows or bubbles! 🫧🎉

💧Do you have a pool at home?💧
So far this year, we've seen 29 animals over 9 different species that have fallen into pools and been rescued— 20 of which have been within the last month. Some of the species we've seen have been Opossums, Marsh Rabbits, Eastern Cottontail Rabbits, Squirrels, and many birds. We are now selling "Frog Logs" at the front desk and at events to help give animals a chance to get out of pools safely, or at least rest for a moment before climbing out. Since baby season is in full swing, and many pools are being used more frequently, now is the perfect time to grab a Frog Log to both support FWH and help keep wildlife safe in your own backyards!💖
