FHSMUN 47 Joint Crisis with the UNSC and the EUCO is in full swing! This year the topic is Volatility and Disputed Nautical Territory in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea 🗺️⚓️
Read on for an excerpt from the Background Guide:
The Eastern Mediterranean Sea is bordered by Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Libya, Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon and Syria. The sea is home to some of the world’s largest untapped oil reserves, which has drawn attention from the international community, and of course the countries with territory in the sea. The EU needs the resources and open access to the Mediterranean Sea for trade and security purposes. The UN has also recognized the importance of the area, and has attempted to act as a mediator for disputes in the region. Tensions are rising steadily, and naval conflict would destroy any hopes of collaboration.
This volatility is rooted in a fundamental clash between international legal standards and national security doctrines. While the discovery of the Leviathan, Aphrodite, and Zohr gas fields initially promised a “new era” of energy independence for Europe, the lack of agreed-upon maritime boundaries has instead transformed these assets into geopolitical liabilities. As nations increasingly deploy naval escorts to protect survey vessels, the region has become one of the most densely militarized maritime zones in the world.
Best of luck to all our delegates! We are already so proud of you and the work you’re putting in!
