Skymont encompasses 2,260 acres on the western edge of the Cumberland plateau. Skymont features include primarily wooded areas, 5 lakes which are stocked with fish and and high adventure opportunities galore! Cool mountain breezes helps provide enjoyable daytime temperatures and cool evenings even during the middle of summer. Typically, Boy Scout Troops from over 10 states participate in one of ou
r summer camps featuring a "classic" camp atmosphere, family-style dining, unique merit badge programs, including our Trail to Eagle program, a ful C.O.P.E. course and numerous high adventure day trips to rock climbing, rappelling, caving and white water rafting. There is a 26 mile perimeter around Skymont, much of which is known as The Perimeter Trail. Skymont is just south of the Savage Gulf area of the Cumberland Plateau and nearby to many other outdoor adventures. The Chattanooga, TN area has been recognized by numerous outdoor magazines and organizations as one of the Nation's top outdoor adventure areas. Interestingly, the land which is now known as Skymont used to have a layover station on the Hill's Turnpike, which was a stagecoach route running between Hillsboro, Tennessee near Nashville to Dalton, Georgia. The coach ran the route twice per month, and also carried mail over the route. The layover station burned the year after the Civil War ended. Skymont Scout Reservation was acquired by the Cherokee Area Council, BSA in 1968. It was previously known as Skymont Hunting and Fishing, Inc. Tropical oceans which once covered what is now Tennessee caused large seams of coal to be embedded in the sandstone and limestone layers of rock.
