The Wasatch Regional Council has released its newest regional transportation plan, and against the wishes of the majority of surveyed Utahans and basic common sense, the plan still concludes with the construction of the world’s longest gondola in Little Cottonwood Canyon. The Wasatch Regional Council now has a chance to fix their original mistake, and removing the gondola from the regional transportation plan would send a strong message to our decision-makers. The gondola was the wrong choice then, and it’s the wrong choice now.

The Wasatch Regional Council last requested public comments about the regional transportation plan for Little Cottonwood Canyon in 2023 and were met with a record number of comments from impassioned Utahans demanding the gondola solution be scrapped in favor of common sense, scalable, cost-effective solutions. The will of the people was ignored in favor of what amounts to a feckless, non-solution. Everything that made the gondola an unworkable solution in 2023 is still present, only now, the cost of construction continues to skyrocket due to inflation and tariffs whose overall impact is yet to be fully felt. What was estimated to be a $1.4 billion dollar project, that would be paid for by every Utah household to the tune of roughly $1,000 in taxes, is only going to continue to increase in cost. Only 10% of Utahans downhill ski yearly on average, which leaves 9 out of 10 Utah taxpayers footing the outlandish bill while receiving no benefit. In fact, the majority of skiers accessing Alta and Snowbird come from out of state, making this a $1,000 (and climbing) tax placed on every household in Utah that disproportionately benefits affluent tourists, and two thriving, private businesses.

In reality, most Utahans will never ski Alta or Snowbird, but they all see the crumbling infrastructure throughout the state and the needs of the communities they call home. Building the gondola would divert transportation funding away from higher priority transportation projects in Utah, ignoring the needs of the people statewide. It’s morally and ethically unjustifiable.
