The Town of Alta, home to the Albion Basin and Alta Ski Area, is located in the beautiful Wasatch Mountains of Utah. The unspoiled character of this unique area has been maintained with the avoidance of over-development/the exploitation of natural resources. Friends of Alta,the non-profit land trust organization, is committed to the area's preservation by acquiring and conserving land, protecting watersheds and promoting environmental education.

Summer in the high alpine may be on its way OUT, but wildflowers are still IN! Alta’s Indian Paintbrush are still in full force, adding touches of brilliant pinks, reds, and oranges to the surrounding landscape.

Known to the scientific community as “Castilleja,” this plant’s genus has over 200 species, making each flower incredibly unique. Believe it or not, the Indian Paintbrush is actually hemiparasitic, meaning that while it can photosynthesis for energy, it also steals water, minerals, and nutrients from the roots of neighboring plants.

Environmental protections are being eliminated at an alarming rate to roll out the red carpet for increased logging, mineral extraction, and energy production. Utah's Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante were recently reduced in size by 90%, to make way for increased mining and extraction of fossil fuels, and now, the Trump administration is attempting the largest land grab in American history by proposing the elimination of the Roadless Rule.

On August 18th, Secretary of Agriculture, Brooke L. Robbins, announced that the U.S. Forest Service had filed a proposal to not only gut, but eliminate the 2021 Roadless Rule in its entirety. If successful, our public lands will be changed irreversibly, with the fallout being catastrophic.

Since 2001, the Roadless Area Conservation Rule (or the Roadless Rule) has stood as a significant milestone in environmental policy, safeguarding approximately 58.5 million acres of untouched National Forest System lands from large-scale logging and road construction. Protecting these wild landscapes is crucial, as they provide significant ecological, economic, and recreational benefits nationwide.

More than 25 million Americans rely on water sourced from roadless areas. If the Roadless Rule is rescinded, this water will be at significant risk of contamination, primarily due to increased soil erosion, toxic runoff, and a national filtration system that would be severely compromised. Such contamination not only affects the safety and quality of our drinking water but also leads to harmful byproducts that can adversely impact the broader environment. These threaten our wildlands and the diverse flora and fauna that depend on these ecosystems, underscoring the importance of protecting these vulnerable areas.

Meet the newest member of our team! 🎉

We’re excited to welcome Jake Kunst, our Fall/Winter 2026 Mimi Levitt Fellow. We’re thrilled to have him on board and look forward to all he’ll contribute as we work together to protect Alta for generations to come. 🏔️

Meet Jake:
I have had the pleasure of being a part of the Alta community for the past five years, and couldn’t be happier to be able to give back with Friends of Alta. Growing up in a remote Colorado town, I fell in love with the outdoors and everything they have to offer.

In my first year of college at the University of Utah I realized that I am most fulfilled
working in and with the outdoors, and conservation work scratches both those itches. I am incredibly excited that I have the opportunity to work with Friends of Alta. It sounds redundant, but the town of Alta holds a very special place in my heart. When I first moved to Utah in 2021, I fully planned on spending the majority of my ski days at Alta’s neighbor. My sister however convinced me to purchase the Alta pass, to which I now owe her a great deal of gratitude. What most impressed me about the resort was not the timeless terrain or unmatched powder, but instead the hearty, welcoming community that extends far beyond the boundaries of the resort. Even the “tourists” seem gravely intertwined to the community, a scene seldom observed at any ski area or town I’ve ever been to.

It was by chance that I found my way into the community of Alta, but I am proud
to say that I have the choice to give back to the town and surrounding natural areas in
which the community relies upon. One of the qualities that separates Alta from many
other mountain towns is its preservation. Alta has not yet become “Aspenized,” and still feels like a true mountain community, one hardened by the elements and steeped in tradition. In order to ensure it continues this path however, much work is to be done. I look forward to learning and implementing elements of conservation to provide for Alta’s future generations.

🌻 Call to Action!! Volunteers Needed: Invasive W**d Management in Alta

Help protect Alta’s beautiful mountain ecosystem by volunteering for invasive w**d management! Volunteers are needed to help identify and remove invasive plant species, supporting healthy native vegetation and preserving the area’s natural landscape.

No previous experience is necessary—guidance and tools can be provided. Come lend a hand, enjoy the outdoors, and make a positive impact in Alta!

Why its important?
Invasive w**ds crowd out native plant species and impair the habitat. Both Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon supply up to 60% of the drinking water to the Salt Lake Valley. The presence of invasive w**ds populations is detrimental to the water quality, cause biodiversity reduction, habitat loss, increases erosion, and inhibit growth of native plants. By removing invasive w**ds we help create an environment in which proper water filtration can occur and biodiversity is maintained. Volunteers will help remove invasive w**ds on one plot of land near in Alta, UT. Volunteers should be able to walk over uneven ground, bend over for extended periods, work outdoors in a variety of conditions, and comply with the safety guidelines.

After the volunteer work, join us and the Alta Environmental Center for some food and beverages as we celebrate a successful day of stewardship!

Join us for our last speaker series event for 2026!
If you love Old West ghost-town history, you won’t want to miss this!

For the first time ever, the mining boomtown of Alta has been partially excavated and what emerged from the ground is incredible. Thousands of artifacts were uncovered, including a fully intact bottle of 150-year-old alcohol, a leather hat, bullets, melted shot glasses, animal bones and so much more. Discover what these objects reveal about the rowdy and genteel past of Little Cottonwood Canyon.

Meet the speaker:
Christopher Merritt received his Ph.D. from the University of Montana in Anthropology in 2010, focusing on archaeological and historical investigations of the Overseas Chinese. Before that, he received a Master's of Science in Industrial Archaeology from Michigan Technological University, where he studied the trade and consumption of Mormon-produced pottery in Utah. Since 2004, Merritt has worked in a variety of professional archaeological settings, including the United States Forest Service in Utah and Nevada, private archaeological contracting in Salt Lake City, and, finally, as the State Historic Preservation Officer for the Utah Division of State History. In addition to the full-time employment with the State of Utah.

Yesterday, we had an incredible time partnering with Alta Kids Camp for a day of exploring and learning in the mountains! Together, we hiked the trails, played wildflower bingo, and made wildflower seed bombs while discovering the many beautiful native plants that call Alta home.

It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature, spark curiosity, and share the importance of protecting our local ecosystems. Thank you to Alta Kids Camp for a fantastic day—we can't wait to do it again!
