🚑 EMS Week | Honoring Those Who Answer the Call 🚑

This week, we recognize and celebrate EMS Week — a time to thank the dedicated EMS providers who serve our community day and night.

At the Alta Fire Department, we have two paramedics, one advanced EMT and four EMTs and one EMR ready to respond to emergencies at all hours, providing compassionate care, lifesaving treatment, and support during some of life’s most difficult moments. Whether it’s a medical emergency, accident, or assisting neighboring agencies, our providers are always ready to help.

We would also like to thank the families, employers, and community members who support our volunteers and make it possible for them to serve.

Please join us in recognizing all EMS professionals for their commitment, sacrifice, and dedication to protecting our communities.

Thank you to all EMS providers — this week and every week. 💙🚒🚑

At Alta Fire, no call is handled alone. Every response—whether it’s a fire, medical emergency, or rescue—relies on strong teamwork. From the first tones to the final cleanup, each member has a role, and it’s the trust in one another that gets the job done safely and effectively.

That teamwork doesn’t stop with us. We regularly work alongside neighboring fire departments, EMS, law enforcement, and county agencies. These partnerships are critical in making sure our community receives the best possible service when it matters most.

We train together, respond together, and support each other—because when seconds count, teamwork matters most.

We would like to thank our partners who helped us out during our challenging fire this week.

🚒 Anhydrous Ammonia Safety Reminder 🚒

As planting season ramps up across our area, the use of anhydrous ammonia is on the rise. While it’s an effective fertilizer, it can also be extremely dangerous if not handled properly.

⚠️ Know the Risks:
Anhydrous ammonia is a highly corrosive chemical that can cause severe burns to the skin, eyes, and lungs. Even brief exposure can result in serious injury.

🛑 Safety Tips to Remember:
• Always wear proper PPE, including goggles and gloves
• Ensure tanks and hoses are in good condition before use
• Never stand downwind when connecting or disconnecting equipment
• Know where your emergency water supply is at all times
• Make sure slow-moving vehicle signs and placards are clearly visible when transporting

🚜 Sharing the Road:
Be alert for farm equipment transporting ammonia tanks. Give them plenty of space and use caution when passing.

👨‍🚒 In Case of Emergency:
If there is a leak or exposure, call 911 immediately. Do not approach the area without proper protective equipment.

Let’s work together to keep everyone safe this planting season! 🌱

We would also like to thank the Storm Lake Fire Department for being on standby for this incident.

🚒 Garage Fire Safety Starts With You 🚒

Your garage might not seem like a high-risk area—but it often contains some of the most flammable items in your home. Taking a few extra precautions can help prevent a small issue from turning into a major fire.

🔥 Watch your heat sources: Keep space heaters, water heaters, and other heat-producing equipment clear of anything that can burn. Maintain at least 3 feet of space around them.

🧴 Handle oily rags carefully: Rags used with oil, stain, or chemicals can spontaneously combust. Store them in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid.

⚡ Check your tools: Power tools and appliances should be unplugged when not in use. Inspect cords regularly for fraying or damage.

🚪 Close the door: If your garage is attached, keep the door leading into your home closed. This can slow the spread of smoke and fire if one starts.

🛠️ Work safely: If you're welding, grinding, or doing any work that creates sparks, make sure the area is clean and free of flammable materials.

🚫 No indoor burning: Never burn trash or use fire pits, grills, or torches inside your garage—this is extremely dangerous.

⏱️ Have an escape plan: Make sure everyone in your home knows at least two ways out and a meeting place outside.

A safe garage is a safer home. Take a few minutes today to look around and reduce your risk! 🔥

Thank you to the City of Alta, IA and the Alta Municipal's for their assistance during this fire.

🚒 Stronger Together: The Importance of Mutual Aid 🤝

In rural communities, fire departments rely heavily on one another. When a large fire, major accident, or other emergency happens, it often takes more than one department to handle the situation safely and effectively. That’s where mutual aid comes in.

Mutual aid is an agreement between neighboring departments to assist each other when additional personnel, equipment, or specialized resources are needed. By working together, rural departments can provide faster, safer, and more efficient service to the communities we all protect.

When you see fire trucks from multiple towns at one incident, it’s not because something is wrong—it’s because departments are working side by side to ensure the best possible outcome.

We are proud to work alongside our neighboring departments and are grateful for their continued partnership and support. When the call comes in, no matter the community, firefighters are ready to answer it together.

🔥 One mission. One team. One community.

Thank you to our most frequent mutual aid partners!

🔥 Wildland & Grass Fire Safety Reminder 🔥

As the weather begins to warm up and vegetation starts to dry out, the risk for wildland and grass fires increases across our area. These fires can spread very quickly, especially when conditions include strong winds, low humidity, and dry fuels.

🚩 What is a Red Flag Warning?
A Red Flag Warning is issued when weather conditions are ideal for rapid fire growth. This typically means strong winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation. When a Red Flag Warning is in effect, any small spark can quickly turn into a fast-moving fire.

🔥 Burn Bans & Burn Warnings
At times, local officials may issue burn bans or burn warnings to help prevent fires during dangerous conditions. When these are in place, outdoor burning is either strongly discouraged or prohibited.

🚫 Help prevent grass fires by:
• Avoiding any outdoor burning during windy or dry conditions
• Never throwing ci******es out of vehicle windows
• Making sure chains or equipment are not dragging and creating sparks
• Keeping burn piles attended at all times (when burning is allowed)
• Properly disposing of ashes in a metal container away from structures

🚒 If you see a grass or wildland fire, report it immediately by calling 911. Quick reporting allows firefighters to respond sooner and prevent fires from spreading.

Our department is always ready to respond, but prevention is the best protection. By staying aware of weather conditions and following burn restrictions, we can all help keep our community safe.

Stay safe! 👨‍🚒🔥

🚗🔥 Vehicle Fire Safety Reminder 🔥🚗

Vehicle fires can happen quickly and are often unpredictable. Whether caused by mechanical issues, electrical problems, or accidents, a vehicle fire can spread rapidly and put lives at risk.

If you ever encounter a vehicle fire:

🚨 Get out immediately – Make sure everyone exits the vehicle and moves a safe distance away.
📞 Call 911 right away – Report the fire and provide your location.
🚫 Do not open the hood if smoke or flames are showing – Opening the hood can allow more oxygen in and cause the fire to grow rapidly.
↔️ Stay at least 100 feet away – Fires can spread quickly, and tires or other components may explode.

Regular vehicle maintenance, watching for warning signs like unusual smells or smoke, and addressing mechanical issues early can help reduce the risk of a vehicle fire.

Our firefighters train regularly to respond to these incidents quickly and safely to protect both people and property. If you see a vehicle fire, remember: stay back and let emergency responders handle it. 🚒

Stay safe!

⛈️ Severe Weather WATCH
A watch means conditions are favorable for severe weather to develop. This is the time to stay alert, review your plan, and be prepared to act.

🚨 Severe Weather WARNING
A warning means severe weather is occurring or imminent. Take action immediately to protect yourself and your family.

We urge everyone to:

Know where your safe room is

Have a plan, including an emergency kit

Stay informed by monitoring local news and weather alerts

Being prepared can make all the difference. Stay safe this spring!
