Thanks Wild Sheep Foundation for having Clay and Sam on your podcast to talk about Texas Bighorn Sheep!

There are more free-roaming aoudad west of the Pecos River in Texas alone than there are bighorn and desert bighorn sheep in Canada, Mexico, and the United States – over 100,000. Texas was home to more than 1,800 desert bighorn sheep just a decade ago. Now, there are only 400.

Desert bighorns in Texas are in jeopardy of being extirpated for a second time. The cause? Competition for forage and water, as well as disease from the invasive aoudad populations that were first introduced as a hunting species by TPWD in 1957 in the Palo Duro Canyon.

In this episode, Sheep Fever co-host and WSF President & CEO Gray N. Thornton discusses this issue and WSF’s new policy on aoudad with Texan WSF Director and Texas Bighorn Society immediate past president Sam Cunningham, TBS president and former WSF staffer Clay Brewer, and WSF COO and Executive Vice President of Conservation Corey Mason.

This is a great chance to learn about the Texas aoudad issue from some of the very best in the business.

We saved the best for last - the Saturday night RoundUp Banquet and Auction was the most fun we've had this year! TBS members and supporters pledged $120K in bids for our Live Auction items and paid over $35K in raffle tickets and games! We always know we have the best members in the state of Texas, but nights like this really remind us how lucky we are to know so many people dedicated to sustaining Desert Bighorn Sheep. Special thanks to 4s Fire and team for helping us with our live auction and to Tapatio Springs Hill Country Resort for hosting us! Congrats to all of our winners, and thank you for making this event so special every year. Keep an eye out on this page for details on our 37th annual RoundUp!

We know so many of you are curious about the science looking into Texas Desert Bighorn Sheep and we are happy to share their presentations in full on our YouTube! Thanks to Masters student Hailey Barton, Dr. Justin French and team at Borderlands Research Institute and to PhD student Chris Carter
, Dr. Warren Conway, and team at Texas Tech University for their hard work and commitment to furthering the research of bighorn sheep! https://youtube.com/

A bad day of golfing is better than a good day of work, and we don’t think these guys had a bad day! Thanks to all of our golfers for playing a round with us at Tapatio during RoundUp, and congrats to and team on coming back to the clubhouse with the lowest score! (We wont tell you what the final number was, just that it was the lowest of the four teams 😉).

Conservation planning 🤝 Mother Nature.

Our Franklin Mountain water guzzlers installed on the 2024 Work Project in anticipation of the new herd are finally in action. Bighorn ewes and lambs were seen this week drinking their fill following the moisture received throughout the week.

This moment is possible because of the love and compassion our members have for these sheep! Thank you for continuing to show up and support our efforts!
