Boating in cold water comes with many dangers including cold water immersion. When immersed in cold water, there are 4 stages of progression.

1️⃣ Cold Shock - Happens immediately upon entering into the water. Remember to remain calm and control your breathing. Once you enter the water, you will gasp for air, causing your breathing to become shallow and irregular.

2️⃣ Swimming Failure - Cold water will inhibit your muscles and ability to move.

3️⃣ Hypothermia - This is the reduction of your body’s core temperature to dangerously low levels. Survival chances are greatly lessened at this stage and you may become unconscious.

4️⃣ Post Rescue Collapse - Once rescued from the cold water, a victim may collapse due to the extreme stress placed on their body during this time. It is important to act carefully and quickly to prevent long term effects.

Yesterday, our Ship had the opportunity to get some hands on fire extinguisher training taught by Ramsey Fire Ex-Chiefs Jimmy Joe and Pierre Gauthier. In addition to excellent information on the types of fire and extinguishers, and how they work, our youth and adults were able to actually discharge dry chemical, CO2, and pressurized water fire extinguishers. We also were able to use a Bulex laser fire extinguisher simulator to "put out" a virtual class A fire, without a burn permit, or any mess to clean up.
One unfortunate Sea Scout learned the disadvantages of being the son of a long time friend of the instructors, but his clothes did dry out eventually, and he came away with a really cool hat.
Our instructors were presented with Ship's patches to add to their collections.
BZ Chiefs. Hope you can join us for a cruise on the Hudson very soon.

This past Saturday, some of our youth were able to get out in our inflatable with our electric outboard for some small boat skills training.
Meanwhile some of our intrepid leaders continued to work to resolve our issues with the port exhaust manifold.
Pretty sure the youth came out ahead on this one, as it should be.

Ranger is getting ready to get off the hard and back in her natural environment. To this end, our crew had a very productive work day this past Saturday. Our new reclaimed Honduras Mahagony cockpit caprails were cut to fit and made ready for finishing. The bridge ladder was reinstalled with new hardware. And most importantly, a stalwart crew completed the sanding, prepping and painting of her bottom. We have set a tentative launch and move back to Alpine date of May 7. Look for updates.

On Sunday, April 3, Sea Scout Ship, Ranger hosted an NJ safe boating course hosted by our past Shipmate Captain Brittany. After a long day, our Sea Scouts achieved a 100% pass rate on their exams and all went home with their temporary license. BZ to Theo, Erik, Collin, Elizabeth, Anthony, and John. Also to Austin who turned in his application at the course, and passed his test.

Skipper, Our Committe Chair and a few intrepid youth helped out Ramapo Valley District at their recent Klondike Derby at Shepherd Lake Recreation area. The weather was foggy, grey and chilly, but our red and blue flag, and blue OSSUs gathered some attention. It was also fun to interact with the Scouts and WeBeLoS whose sleds we checked in at "Town 1".
