Notice of Dissolution of Long Lake Lights Festival:
It is with a mix of gratitude and sadness that we announce the dissolution of Long Lake Lights Festival. What began as a small fireworks show in a backyard has grown over the years into the beloved "Lighting Up the Sky over Long Lake" and the cherished Long Lake Lights Festival. These events have brought our community together in ways that words cannot fully capture, and we have been fortunate to experience the joy, laughter, and camaraderie that they created.
From the very first South Beach triathlon to the petting zoo, the bus rides that helped more people enjoy the fireworks, the Friday night boat parades, the music at the Sandies, and our fundraising dinners, it has truly been a fun and fulfilling ride over the last 17 years. So many wonderful memories have been made, and it’s been a privilege to watch the event grow and evolve over the years.
However, as with all seasons, there comes a time when things must change. Our small but dedicated "skeleton crew" has faced increasing challenges in raising the necessary funds and recruiting volunteers to keep these traditions alive. Last year alone, we faced significant difficulties, including a sinking barge, another that is in need of repair, cargo shipping increases, the rising fireworks cost, challenges in finding storage for the band barge at the south end of the lake close to the Sandies, and the overwhelming task of managing the event with such a small team. Not to mention the cost of the rainout day last year that added another $4,000 to our total owed to Wolverine Fireworks Company.
With only $1,300 remaining in our account—far below our usual balance of $8,000 that we rely on to cover upfront costs and roll over from year to year—it has become clear that we are unable to raise the funds needed to continue. While many have enjoyed our events, too few have stepped forward to donate and volunteer at events to help ensure their continuation.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of our sponsors and supporters over the years. Your generosity made it possible for us to bring these events to life and share them with the community. We are so grateful to you for helping make the Long Lake Lights Festival and "Lighting Up the Sky over Long Lake" such unforgettable experiences.
As we wind down the organization, we have made the decision to donate our remaining funds to the Long Lake Improvement Association, an organization whose work we deeply respect and support.
If someone is interested in starting their own fireworks event for Long Lake, the same location next to the Sand Bar & Grill will be available. We would be more than happy to help with contacts, direction and details. If nobody wants to do this, we will either donate our barges to another similar organization or sell them. Please reach out if you are interested 😊
Thank you again to everyone who has been a part of this incredible journey. We will forever cherish the great years of family, friendship, community, and fireworks that we’ve shared.
