A bobcat stalked and struck a turkey hunter on April 18 near Nekoosa, Wis. The hunter, who recorded a video of the encounter, sustained a scratch on his arm.

During Wisconsin’s youth season, a 3-year-old was involved in a shooting that injured two people, a 40-year-old man and a 7-year-old child after they were mistaken for a turkey. Both were hit with shotgun pellets and survived with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to reports, the child was hunting under the state’s mentored youth program. An adult mentor was present, guiding the firearm and assisting with the shot when it was taken at what they believed was a turkey. The investigation indicates this was a target misidentification incident, not a child acting independently. So let’s be honest it was the adult that is to blame for this.

Wisconsin law allows very young hunters to participate under direct supervision, placing responsibility on the adult mentor for safety and decision-making in the field.

Situations like this will inevitably lead states to revisit and potentially tighten youth hunting laws.
