This one hits hard. This is how Gunner was killed. Someone turning left onto the main road didn’t adequately look before pulling out, and Gunner’s bike and body totaled her vehicle. Read that again. My son’s bike and body totaled her vehicle.
He was going 40 miles per hour, not flying on his bike. Doing everything right, all his safety gear on.
Please, please help yourself overcome inattentional blindness. SEE motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians. When your brain is focused on looking for a gap in traffic it can overlook a motorcycle plainly visible in that ‘gap’. Tell yourself every time you’re pulling into traffic, “I’m looking for cars AND motorcycles.” It helps switch on your brains active scanning mode so you are more likely to actually see them.
Look both directions while you’re making your turn.
If you can’t clearly see there’s no motorcycle in what you think is an open spot, don’t go!! Waiting 30 more seconds before pulling left into traffic is easier to live with than killing someone.
If traffic is really heavy and you have to turn left, turn right and pull into a business to turn around to go back the other direction. The added steps are better than turning left in a hurry, missing a motorcycle, and killing someone like Gunner.

Ok y’all, it’s nearing the end of the riding season, and it’s time to plan for which events to attend next year! Our first year as The Gunner Dortch Memorial Foundation was a huge success. We reached so many people and had a ton of support at our events and fundraisers. We are looking to be back even bigger and better next riding season. There are so many incredible events in our short riding window here in Michigan, but we can’t attend them all! We want to hear from you.

Trauma kits for the participants of our Road Guardians class have been upgraded! Looking forward to seeing everyone on November 7th at Vehicle City Harley Davidson. If you weren’t able to get in to this class, we are hoping to offer more classes in the future. We are still looking for someone or a restaurant to sponsor lunch!
