Bacon County 4-H’er Angie Reyes and 4-H Agent Becky Griffin traveled to Toombs County yesterday to attend the Southeast District (SED) 4-H Winners Workshop. Earlier this year at Southeast District Project Achievement (DPA), Angie earned 1st place in the Senior Food Fare project area, securing her spot at the state level competition.

Winners Workshop allowed Angie an opportunity to sharpen her presentation skills, connect with fellow district winners, and prepare for the next step as she heads toward Georgia 4-H State Congress competition this summer.

During our final Bacon County 4-H in-school 5th Grade club meetings for the 2025-2026 school year, students were challenged to work with teammates to create a LEGO project based on a random topic. The room was filled with creativity, laughter, teamwork, and some seriously impressive designs!

Once the building was complete, each group presented their creation and explained their thought process to the class. This fun activity gave students the chance to strengthen teamwork and public speaking skills while letting their imaginations run wild. We loved seeing students encourage one another, solve problems together, and confidently share their ideas!

In addition to all the other wonderful experiences our 4-H’ers were afforded during their day at the Marine Education Center and Aquarium, they also got a close-up look at the tiny wonders of the coast! Through microscopes and hands-on laboratory techniques, 4-H’ers examined and identified marine specimens while learning how environmental factors shape coastal ecosystems.

We are so thankful to UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant for creating such an engaging and educational opportunity for our youth!

Our 4-H’ers had an “ink”-redible time participating in squid dissections during their trip to the Marine Education Center and Aquarium on Skidaway Island! 4-H’er took advantage of the opportunity to investigate the form and function of squid through guided dissection and discussion of internal anatomy. As they explored these fascinating cephalopods, they learned more about the diversity of soft-bodied mollusks and the important role marine organisms play in coastal ecosystems.

It is hands-on learning experiences such as this that help to spark curiosity and inspire future scientists!

While visiting the Marine Education Center and Aquarium on Skidaway Island, our 4-H’ers had a “FIN”-tastic time trying their hands at Gyotaku, known in layman’s terms as fish printing! The Japanese art of Gyotaku has been practiced for centuries, and students enjoyed learning about this unique tradition while creating their own colorful masterpieces. Using anatomically accurate fish molds, 4-H’ers designed original pieces of artwork on paper and explored the creative side of marine science. From paint-covered hands to one-of-a-kind prints, it was a fun, educational, and artistic experience our 4-H’ers won’t forget!

Bacon County 4-H and Coffee County 4-H teamed up on April 10th for an exciting day of hands-on learning at the Marine Education Center and Aquarium on Skidaway Island! 4-H’ers had an opportunity to explore the aquarium, touch tanks, science labs, art lab, docks, and the Jay Wolf Nature Trail while learning about Georgia’s coastal ecosystems. They enjoyed engaging, experiential activities and even observed and handled live marine invertebrates, including whelks, spider crabs, hermit crabs, and horseshoe crabs.

The group also got a behind-the-scenes look at the aquarium’s holding tanks, filter systems, and food preparation areas, making it a fun and unforgettable day of discovery and coastal education!

Stay tuned for photographs of their experiences using the microscopes, dissecting squid, and Gyotaku (fish painting)!
