In 1888, the formation of Alma Canning and Evaporating Plant began. It later evolved into the Alma Canning Company in 1936. The H.L. Hunt family purchased the company in 1961. The Allen family purchased the company in 1971. The story didn’t end there-Alma became the Spinach Capital of the World and Popeye made his home in downtown Alma. Allen Canning Co closed in Alma in 2010. Our City of Alma, Street Department rescued a piece of history when they saved a sign from the Allen Canning Co building. This week, the sign got refurbished and was hung on THE SHED! Another piece of the history of downtown Alma restored. Hometown Alma City of Alma Arkansas
