Anyone who thinks chickens don't have friends or family needs to spend more time with chickens. Small Fry has lived with Parsnip since she arrived at RoR in November 2022. Parsnip is currently in the house so I can closely monitor him and this has definitely thrown off Small Fry's routine. Last night she didn't want to go to bed. I sat in her coop and eventually she came in and settled down but it took some time. This morning I let her out of her coop before anyone else so she could explore during food prep time. She misses her Parsnip.

Parsnip is doing okay this morning. Some p**p overnight and his crop has gone down a bit but there's still something in there. We've updated our veterinary team and we'll see what we hear back about next steps.

Hopefully Small Fry and Parsnip will be back together in no time.

Parsnip is home. He's extremely unimpressed with me, today, and his watermelon themed confinement pen but he's not too upset about the AC and the big squishy bed he has to rest on.

We aren't out of the woods yet but I'm feeling much more positive than I was earlier today. Parsnip passed a lot of p**p at the vets and has had several p**ps since he got home. His crop feels like it's starting to empty! The next few days will require a lot of careful monitoring, making sure things progress like they should, and lots of supervised walks. Walking is good for their digestion too!

A huge thank you to the amazing team at East Oak Animal Hospital today for their help. This sanctuary wouldn't be what it is without them. And another huge thank you to everyone who is following along and keeping Parsnip in their thoughts.

I'll feel even better if he starts chatting back at me soon. This silent Parsnip definitely isn't normal! But he definitely seems better than he did this morning.

X-rays showed a lot of p**p inside of Parsnip. The p**p is very hard and very dry. First step is getting him comfortable and through this and then trying to determine what caused it. After his exam and x-rays, Parsnip decided to do a little sunbathing. He had to suffer the indignity of an e***a (best patient ever!) and he's p**ped out a whole bunch of p**p! Now we're chilling in the grass giving him a little break before he gets some fluids.

There's a lot going on here and I want to give everyone an update but I'm going to start with the most pressing issue. Yesterday evening I noticed that Parsnip was straining to p**p and his crop had not fully emptied from breakfast. These are both highly concerning signs, especially in a Cornish Cross. I rushed him inside, we did an Epsom salt soak, and he was able to pass a small amount of very hard, very full of wood chips, p**p. I contacted the vet immediately (they are the best people on the planet) and they answered me even though it was after hours. No dinner last night, some mineral oil to try help things pass, and he was to join Cherry for her 530p appointment. He slept in his coop with Small Fry last night but he was in a crate with a towel and a puppy pad so we could assess what he managed to pass overnight.

Well, this morning pretty much confirmed all my worries. Barely anything overnight and his crop still hasn't gone down. We have an 1130a appointment now and I'll keep everyone updated.

I'll be honest, I'm very worried. Parsnip is 5 years old and has never had an issue with eating wood chips before. That makes me worry that something else, potentially a mass, is causing things to not pass.

Cherry has been having increased difficulties getting around the past couple of days. I'm not sure what caused it but we're working to get her more comfortable. We've started 2-3x daily sling time, added in a different medication, and we'll be heading to the vets on Wednesday.

Sid has been hard at work supervising today's run cleanup. Every wheelbarrow going in and out of the area is carefully inspected and approved by him first.

Roosters are often misunderstood. In the backyard chicken community, you'll frequently hear that you can't keep multiple roosters together, that roosters are mean, or that they serve no purpose in a flock. The reality is that roosters, like hens, are individuals. Their personalities, temperaments, and social dynamics vary a lot.

Here at Roosters of Ragnarok, Sid, Manny, and Ricky share a run with the Chaos Ladies and it's working out wonderfully. They spend their days dust bathing, sunbathing, keeping the peace between the hens and supervising our cleaning projects.

WE DID IT!!! Because of your generosity, you're looking at the first of two mulch deliveries!!! This is going to be a huge improvement for the crew - added enrichment and softer footing for those with mobility issues. I'll post pictures throughout the weekend as we get this mulch in place and re-do the layout of the runs.

It's another very hot day here in New Jersey but the humidity has decreased a bit today. We've been keeping a very close eye on the crew - fans, misting systems, wetting down the ground, fresh water (always), and lots of veggies (cucumbers, celery, lettuce, etc.).

I'm happy to report that our mulch fundraiser is doing amazingly well thanks to some absolutely amazing friends of the sanctuary! I'll post updates tomorrow as the crew and I work on spreading fresh mulch!

The Great Mulchening of 2026!

We're trying something a little different! One of the things our residents absolutely love is fresh mulch. It gives them new opportunities for scratching, digging, foraging and conducting important chicken business. It also provides softer footing which is important for our older residents and those with mobility challenges.

Tiny has informed management that the current mulch situation is acceptable but could be improved.

Ari has reportedly filed several complaints.

The crew are requesting additional digging opportunities!

The mulch we use comes in 2 cubic foot bags that cost $3.67 each. We can have them delivered in groups of 10 bags at a time, which is much easier for us to store than a bulk delivery.

So we're running a "Sponsor a bag for $3.67" fundraiser!

Our goal is ten bags. Twenty bags is the stretch goal and would absolutely blow my mind.

If you'd like to help make the residents' outdoor spaces a little more comfortable and a lot more fun, donations can be sent directly via PayPal or Venmo so we can order the mulch as soon as enough funds come in.
