A Special Meeting with the Mayor of Pittsburgh

Monks and members of PBC had the privilege of visiting the Mayor’s Office of the City of Pittsburgh to express our sincere appreciation for the Mayor’s support of the felicitation ceremony honoring Bhante Pemaratana and for proclaiming July 12, 2026, as Dr. Soorakkulame Pemaratana Day.

The Mayor, Corey O'Connor and his staff gave us a very warm welcome. During the visit, we presented the Mayor with a special token of appreciation in gratitude for his friendship, support, and recognition of the contributions of the Pittsburgh Buddhist Center and the Buddhist community.

We are deeply grateful for this meaningful gesture and for the continued support and goodwill of the City of Pittsburgh.

Meditation Retreat with Bhante Yogavacara Rahula Sept 18-20

We had a wonderful weekend of learning, mindfulness, and reflection during our meditation retreat with Bhante Yogavacara Rahula. All participants benefited greatly from Bhante’s guidance and insightful Dhamma talks.

The practice of noble silence, mindful eating, yoga movements, walking meditation, and Q&A sessions enriched everyone’s understanding and experience of the Dhamma.

We are deeply grateful to Bhante Rahula for his generous and selfless guidance.

We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the families who generously provided meals for the monks and retreat participants It was a weekend of learning, mindfulness and reflection. All participants benefited a lot from Bhante's guidance and Dhamma talks. Everyone enjoyed the taste of food and taste of friendship during the Sri Lankan Food Festival held on last Saturday, 12th September. Despite sporadic rain and road construction, we had a good turnout. While we raised funds for the Buddhist center, we also raised the awareness of Buddhism and various programs offered by the center. A deep appreciation to volunteers who worked hard in hopper station, Kotthu station, dinner meal station, drink station, finger food station and ticket station. We are also grateful to donors of home-cooked meals and those who helped setting up and cleaning. We thank all participants who attended the festival and joined the temple tours. Together we made this day a memorable pleasant day.

The felicitation ceremony honoring Bhante Pemaratana on his appointment as the Chief Monk of the Rāmañña Monastic Order in the United States was successfully held on July 12, 2026, at the Pittsburgh Buddhist Center.

In a special recognition, the Mayor of Pittsburgh proclaimed July 12 as “Pemaratana Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

The ceremony was graced by senior monks from Sri Lanka, England, and various states across the United States. H.E. Mahinda Samarasinghe, the Sri Lankan Ambassador to the United States, presented Bhante Pemaratana with the ceremonial fan traditionally associated with this position.

Religious leaders representing Christianity, Judaism, and Hinduism also attended and offered their blessings and good wishes. A traditional Sri Lankan dance troupe from New York added beauty and cultural richness to the occasion.

Approximately 300 people from Pittsburgh and several other states participated in this historic celebration. The event was made possible through the dedication and hard work of a wonderful team of volunteers.

Our deepest gratitude goes to all the Venerable monks, distinguished guests, religious leaders, supporters, volunteers, and participants who joined us and contributed to the success of this memorable occasion.
