Happy 1️⃣9️⃣4️⃣th birthday to First Lady Caroline Harrison, born on this day in 1832! 🎂🎉

Today, we remember Caroline for her lifelong dedication to public service and her enduring legacy of creativity. 🎨

Caroline Harrison's childhood was full of books, art, literature, and progressive ideals that she carried throughout the rest of her life.

🎓 Her parents were both educators and firmly believed in women's access to education, eventually leading her to obtain a degree in music from Oxford Female Institute. 📜

And her parents' advocacy didn't stop at women's rights. They were also staunch abolitionists, and Caroline's family home was a stop on the Underground Railroad as part of the network along Hamilton Avenue in Cincinnati, Ohio. 🚂🛤️

She met her husband and future President, Benjamin Harrison, while he was one of her father's students at Farmer's College in Cincinnati, Ohio. The couple moved to Indianapolis, IN, where Caroline was an active member of the Ladies' Patriotic Association and Ladies' Sanitary Committee—women-led relief organizations that provided food, supplies, and medical aid to Union soldiers during the Civil War. 🎖️

As First Lady, Caroline continued her charity work, which she preferred over the hosting duties of her role during her early days in the White House. An area on the third floor was repurposed as her art studio, acting as a haven from her busy schedule where she could pursue her life's longest passion—painting. 🖼️

🍽️ She is perhaps most remembered for her hand-painted White House China set featuring golden corn stalks and for helping to found the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

We were honored to attend the Revolutionary War Patriot Grave Marking Ceremony for Peter Wise at Marlboro Cemetery and represent the Jane Bain Chapter NSDAR. The John Stark Chapter SAR did a wonderful job getting the dedication ceremony arranged and completed! There were even direct descendants in attendance! Our appreciation to the John Stark Chapter SAR for all of their work and dedication in achieving the recognition Peter Wise earned and deserved. 👏🏻👏🏻

Thank you to our members Michal and Connie who represented Jane Bain Chapter at the recent dedication of the new monument memorial in East Liverpool, Ohio. The monument was dedicated by the Mahoning Valley Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution for 162 Revolutionary War Patriots who are buried in Columbiana County. What a beautiful memorial!

"At 3:00 pm, Sunday, August 23, 2026, the Sons of the American Revolution will host a ceremony to honor Stark County native and Revolutionary War veteran Peter Wise with the dedication of a memorial marker at his grave in Marlboro Cemetery in Alliance, Ohio. The ceremony will feature a presentation of colors by the SAR State Color Guard with ri**es (all dressed in Revolutionary War period uniforms).

Members of the Jane Bain Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution will join the SAR in honoring this patriot.

The public is invited to attend this colorful and dignified tribute to one of America’s first veterans. For additional information or directions contact Gary Martzolf, John Stark Chapter Grave Marking Chairman, at (330) 327-7869.

I'm late on posting this, but still it's important to recognize! Happy (belated) Birthday to one of the four founders of DAR, Eugenia Washington. According to "Women of Vision" by Noel-Marie Fletcher, Miss Eugie was the great-granddaughter of Col. Samuel Washington, the younger brother of George Washington, making her his great-grandniece. Col. Washington served with the Virginia forces during the Revolution but unfortunately passed away from "a respiratory ailment at age 46 in 1781 only three weeks before the victory...at Yorktown, VA." Miss Eugie lived through the Civil War, and at one point she and her father tried to flee an oncoming battle close to their home, and they both ended up stranded on the battlefield itself! "Lying on that dreadful field, she witnessed the whole battle and saw brigade after brigade broken or wiped out in the fierce charges." That experience never left her.
