Because Wong Mau produced those medium brown cats with dark brown extremities who resembled her, it is now thought that she was what we today call a natural Tonkinese. ("Natural" refers to the coat color, not its origins) Cats with aquamarine eyes and this coloration have been seen on the Malay peninsula. In the 1960’s, breeders began working on a breed which was more compact and rounder than a Siamese by breeding Burmese to Siamese, eventually creating a breed which could reliably replicate its moderate body and aquamarine eyes. They named it the Tonkinese. Fanciers will readily recognize the names of many of the original Tonkinese breeders: Jane Barletta, Sharon Roy and her mother Norma, Joan Bernstein, Catherine Rokaw, Bonnie Smith, and Scott Cowling.
