In the spring of 2000, the Indian Mission Store closed its doors in Alliance for the last time. Don Mink, his family, and members of the Indian Mission Church of God congregation operated the store for thirty years. Before his retirement, an appeal went out to the community for others t

o continue this important service. The store had been essential to approximately 350 Native American families living in the area and hundreds of other needy people. A special group of people, recognizing the importance of this service, decided to take on this project. The importance of recycling clothing and household goods was also recognized. In April of 2000, The Mission Store, Inc. was formed with a board of directors comprised of community volunteers. An underlying dedication to Br. Mink's commitment to those less fortunate guided the new store in its mission. Continuing to support his noble efforts was the foundation of The Mission Store. The Board of Directors pledged a monthly stipend to the Indian Mission Church of God to help replace the income lost from the original store. The funds were to be used at the discretion of Br. Mink and would continue for the life of The Mission Store. It was felt that the ministry of Br. Mink was crucial and needed to continue. A Quonset hut was rented, and donations began to be received from the local and nearby communities. The response was amazing. Large quantities of clothing, appliances, furniture, books, and games were brought to the store. Over fifty volunteers sorted goods according to size, type, and seasonal use. The Mission Store, Inc. opened June 1, 2000, with over 1,100 customers the first month. In 2003, The Mission Store moved to the current location at 203/205 Box Butte Avenue. The store continues to be graced by generous donations, grateful customers, and committed volunteers.
