Funding has been approved for repairs to multiple historic structures within Franklin County, Indiana's Whitewater Canal State Historic Site including the one-of-a-kind covered wood truss aqueduct bridge.

We’re excited to share an update on the Whitewater Canal State Historic Site Preservation Project!

Yesterday, the Indiana State Budget Committee approved the release of $7.4 million in state-allocated funding. Together with the $7 million matching grant we announced in January, we have now secured $14.4 million to restore and preserve the Duck Creek Aqueduct, Laurel feeder dam and lock 24.

We will continue working through the planning process with our engineers so we can get the work out to bid. Please check back for updates as the project progresses.

After all the efforts that have been made over the years by various groups to maintain and repair the historic Sanborn Covered Bridge, it is unfortunate that the complications created by removing it from the river when it was in danger of collapsing, attempting to reconstruct it higher so it wasn’t as susceptible to flooding and needs to redesign the repairs multiple times due to these changes have caused the abandonment of plans to rebuild it over the river.
We appreciate all the efforts of the Town of Lyndon, Vermont, and the Preservation Trust of Vermont put into fundraising and obtaining grants and thank you to all who have donated towards the repair work. Given this setback, we encourage all explore alternative options for reconstructing this special covered bridge, the last of the large Paddleford truss covered bridges in Vermont.

The Historical Society of Perry County is proud and grateful to share that it has received nearly $3,000 in funding, along with additional funding commitments, from the National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges to support repairs to its Red Covered Bridge property in Liverpool.

The bridge currently requires close to $12,000 in repairs, and we are incredibly grateful for the support of the National Society in helping preserve this important historic structure.

If you would like to help support the necessary structural stone masonry and wood repairs, donations by cash or check can be mailed to:

Thank you to Ben Botkin and Lookout Eugene-Springfield for this article about the challenges of maintaining our historic covered bridges.

In Lane County, covered bridges pose a challenge and an opportunity. County officials need to weigh the costs of keeping them maintained with the intrinsic value of preserving history.
