As many of you know, with the help and inspiration of my late husband, Todd, along with my family and a tight group of friends, in 2005, I founded the nonprofit Seas It. The mission we created back then was simple: Promote recovery through recreation for cancer patients and caregivers who seek to recapture positive thinking and to regain control over their lives. Since 2005, Seas It has given out thousands of patient and caregiver grants nationwide. The range of grants is wide, and always so very well received, from cooking classes to gym memberships, yoga, bicycles, and kayaks to name a few. Thanks to our annual 5K, Seas It was able to sustain its grant program and continue to spread awareness of our cause. Unfortunately, due to Covid, our last 5K - our only annual fundraiser, was in 2019. Until we can plan another 5K, we are proud to share that we have someone incredible in our corner fundraising for and running in the NYC marathon on behalf of Team Seas It. If you’ve been with Seas It from the beginning, you’ll know that running 5Ks, half-marathons, and marathons while proudly wearing the Seas It Blue jersey, is part of our DNA. I hope you will take a few minutes to follow the link in our bio to read about my amazing husband JD’s NYC marathon goal and his commitment to Team Seas It. I cannot eloquently express how much it means to me that he’s doing this; I’m truly so touched. Thanks, as always, for your incredible support over the years and let’s go JD & Team Seas It NYC Marathon!

New look; same mission! Very happy to share our new website design. A few months in the process and huge thanks to for the amazing help and guidance. Tomorrow would have been our annual 5K in Allenhurst. While we can’t be hosting it in person as we would have very much preferred, we hope some of you will get out there tomorrow and run, walk, or seize the day somehow! If you feel like signing up, follow the link in our bio and give us a shout out by using in your posts tomorrow. We are feeling very confident that by this time next summer we can all gather in person for our annual 5K. Until then, thanks, as always, for the support of our mission & for helping us spread the word! If you do know of anyone battling cancer or taking care of someone who is, please direct them to our website. 💙 https://www.seasit.org

In 2005, Todd and I started Seas It to help cancer patients and their caregivers. What we didn’t count on were all the incredible and inspirational people we would meet.

There are no words I can offer to express how much my heart breaks for Maria’s family and the many, many people who loved her so. The world has lost one of our brightest and most loving souls. Maria was by far the most inspirational person I have come across... In 2014, Maria and I met because of Seas It. What started as a small Grant led to a wonderful friendship. Back then, Maria was diagnosed with a rare pancreatic cancer but her daunting diagnoses did not stop her from living her life and staying positive and exuding light for others in the darkest of times. She was always stopping by to visit the boys and me, and drop off her delicious banana bread. Her ever present smile and optimism reflected her tremendous inner strength and fighting spirit which remains an inspiration. Maria battled courageously for 8 years and truly embodied Seas It’s mission of living a little each day.

Though she may not be physically with us anymore - Maria’s incredible spirit lives on through the many, many lives she touched - and most of all through her beautiful children and husband who we will keep in our hearts and prayers.

We wanted to share some news about Seas It with the hopes that you will pass along this information to anyone in need of our services.

As you might already know, Seas It’s primary function is to help cancer patients and their caregivers stay active during cancer treatments. Seas It teams up with adults fighting cancer to coordinate and fund activities that shift their focus from illness to wellness. Whether it be through kayaking, yoga, cooking or writing workshops, Seas It connects cancer patients and their familial caregivers to activities that foster vitality and a sense of control.

Seas It does this by offering two types of “grants”: Patient and Caregiver Grants.

Established in 2005, our original Patient and Caregiver Grant is designed for the patient undergoing treatments and the caregiver providing support. Seas It assists in the coordination of and provides financial assistance for recreational activities geared toward mental and physical recovery. Grant recipients are encouraged to pursue activities that make them feel vibrant, positive, and in control during cancer treatments. Examples include but are not limited to: biking, tennis, skiing, knitting, surfing, art lessons, karate classes, fishing, piano, theater, pottery, yoga, golf, hiking, and team soccer.

Typically, patients and/or their caregivers can apply for grants directly on our website. However, we are in the process of updating our website and streamlining the application process and our site is down for a few more days. As soon as our website is back up and running with our new application on-line, we will let you know.

In the meantime, if you know of anyone that can benefit from Seas It, please have them reach out to Seas It directly and we can work on their application together. [email protected]

This has been a really hard time for all of us but as I was working on fulfilling some grants yesterday, I once again realized how fortunate I am and how extremely difficult this time has been for so many people on so many levels.

I think, now more than ever, we need to continue to lift our friends and family up and help them stay as positive as possible. Seas It has the resources to help and I would greatly appreciate if you could spread the word. Thank you!

Hoping you are all safe, healthy, and hanging in there.

Kind regards,
Amanda

A handful will be running and a handful will be walking. The boys likely will be on their bikes! A huge thank you to everyone for braving the heat and coming out yesterday to support Seas It and our mission of recovery thorough recreation. When we started this foundation 14 years ago, our goal was to help cancer patients and their families stay positive and active during dark times. All of you - our runners, walkers, volunteers, sponsors, cheerleaders, sprinkler shooters, water station champions, traffic controllers, our fire department, our police department, our public works, and our race team - all of you embodied the very essence of Seas It which is getting out and coming together as a community to lift one another and create something that is greater than the sum of all its parts. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! We can’t wait for next year’s race.
