Dr. Amanda Tachine, Professor in Educational Leadership and Innovation at Arizona State University, came to campus as part of the GVSU Colloquium to teach about Native Presence and Indigenous Futures. Dr. Tachine’s research explores the relationship between systemic and structural histories of settler colonialism and the ongoing erasure of Indigenous presence and belonging in college settings using qualitative Indigenous methodologies. She is the author of Native Presence and Sovereignty in College and co-editor of Weaving an Otherwise: In-relations Methodological Practice.

The Colloquium series is a collaboration between Division of Inclusion & Equity, Office of the Provost, Human Resources, and the Pew Faculty Teaching and Learning Center that brings contemporary scholars and practitioners to campus to drive action to create conditions where our historically and structurally represented faculty and staff can thrive.

Beginning the Winter 2023 semester, Dr. Julia Snider and Professor Lexie Oosting developed the Self-Advocate Guest Presenter Series to provide opportunities for individuals within the GVSU community to learn from, and not just about, people with disabilities.

We are excited to share that for the Winter 2024 semester, they have partnered with the Inclusion and Equity Institute to continue their Presenter Series and expand its reach to students, faculty, and staff across the university.

Their partnership with the Inclusion and Equity Institute allows us to compensate our presenters for their time, planning, and expertise. This semester, we have invited three presenters, representing a variety of identities and experiences, to share their expertise and stories on self-selected topics of their choosing. National presenter and advocate, Jordyn Zimmerman kicked off our Winter 2024, followed by Kyle Bueche, Jane Standal, and Drew Vandlen from Calvin University’s Life and Career Studies program. To wrap up the series, we will be welcoming Corissa Pittman and Mary Shehan!

DEI frameworks are always in need of review to make sure they remain relevant and motivate action. GVSU is in the process of updating and we see students as key co-creators.

To ensure that student voice is amplified, the Inclusion and Equity Institute has created a Student Engagement Cohort consisting of 10 students with diverse lived experiences and from various class standings and majors. These insightful student leaders are working alongside staff and faculty to redesign GVSU's Inclusion and Equity DEI framework.

GVSU members of the Native American Advisory Council, the Divisions of Inclusion and Equity and Student Affairs visited Arizona State University (ASU) in early November. ASU has robust programming for Native American and Indigenous initiatives, student supports and academics as well as long-held relationships with the 22 Federally-Recognized Tribal Nations of Arizona. As GVSU strives to increase our own learning and accountability, we will be taking into account what we learned to deepen our commitments.

At the GVSU I&E Institute, we greatly value our student employees as knowledge creators and teachers! As future leaders in the inclusion and equity space, we are deeply grateful for their investment of time and talent in the work we do.

Special thanks to our students for the workshops they helped to create for our annual Teach-In which had over 1,100 participants! Sydney Hohlbein & Heaven Walker (Ally to Accomplice) and Renee Carter (Identifying and Dismantling Ableism).

The National Day of Racial Healing (NDRH), part of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation efforts, offers people, organizations and communities opportunities to bring people together to take collective action for a more just and equitable world.

Many would like to talk about the impact of racism and the need for racial healing in our country but don’t know where to start. Some worry that others won’t understand their points of view or that what they say or do might be offensive.

The Inclusion and Equity Institute at Grand Valley State University invited members of the broader West Michigan community to join us in an evening book discussion. We had read, Dr. Gail C. Christopher’s Rx Racial Healing: A Guide to Embracing Our Humanity, which unpacks a false belief in a racial hierarchy and provides individuals an overview of the methodology, tools and resources to facilitate transformational change.

The Inclusion and Equity Institute staff members Latoya Booker - Learning & Development Program Director; and Marlene Kowalski-Braun - AVP & Deputy Chief Inclusion and Equity Officer; gave a presentation at Michigan Community College Association’s Student Success Summit (MCCA) on shared equity leadership (SEL).

This SEL work is based on research out of the American Council on Education and seeks to interrupt the leader-follower binary and create collective capacity and accountability.

The I&E Institute was proud to partner with Alumni Affairs, Procurement and the Bookstore to host GVSU outstanding alumnae, Shannon Cohen, for the Alumni Supplier Diversity Program in early October.

Shannon reminded us that we need to share who we are and what we know as we all have gifts that can benefit the world!
