Today, the Alief Super Neighborhood Council joined AliefVotes and the Houston Tree Initiative for a Community Initiatives and Tree Equity Workshop focused on turning neighborhood ideas into action.
Barry Ward, executive director of Trees For Houston discussed the importance of expanding tree coverage and making sure every community benefits from the shade, environmental improvements, and quality-of-life benefits trees provide.
Ed Pettitt of Friends of Columbia Tap shared how residents have organized around the trail, developed community-driven action plans, and built partnerships to advance improvements. Their work offers useful lessons for how Alief residents can organize around local priorities and turn good ideas into tangible projects.
Thank you to our speakers, partners, and the Alief residents and young leaders who spent their Saturday helping imagine a greener and stronger community. Planting trees matters, but building the local leadership needed to sustain that work matters just as much.
What areas of Alief would benefit most from additional trees, shade, or other community-led improvements?
