With what is happening in my home state ; (PA) with Fetterman, now is an opportune time to talk about Ableism.
Abelism Refers to bias, prejudice, and discrimination against people with disabilities. The underlying belief is people with disabilities are less valuable than non disabled people. That we need to be “fixed” or that we are “less than.” Viewing us as being less intelligent as abled bodied people. It can be CONCIOUS or UNCONCIOUS.
Some Examples Are ( please add your example in the comments)
1. Lack of compliance with disability rights laws like the ADA.
2. Using disability as a punchline, and mocking people with disabilities.
3. Refusing to provide reasonable accommodations.
4. Failing to incorporate accessibility into building design plans.
5. Saying “ you do not look disabled.” This one I’ve heard for years and it still irritates me. My first thought is what the heck am I supposed to look like???
If you have finished reading this post, thank you for taking the time to learn what many Americans deal with on a daily basis. To be exact, 1 out of 4 adults in United States have some type of disability.
We Can’t change until we acknowledge Abelism exists in society and in ourselves. Just be kind❤️
