Time Capsule Guidelines β City of Algood
The City of Algood has established a community time capsule in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States. Collection of items will take place through June 19, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. at Algood City Hall (Utility Office). The time capsule will be sealed and placed at City Hall on July 4, 2026, at 9:00 a.m.
To ensure the long-term preservation and historical value of the contents, all submissions must comply with the following guidelines:
1. Paper Materials
Books and documents printed on high-quality, archival paper are strongly preferred. Newspapers and other low-quality paper products are highly acidic and prone to rapid deterioration, which may also affect surrounding items. Such materials should be photocopied onto archival-quality paper prior to submission. Lamination or vacuum sealing is permitted to enhance preservation.
2. Photographs
Photographs are highly encouraged as enduring records of community life. Black-and-white images are preferred due to their superior longevity compared to color prints. To prevent adhesion or damage, photographs should be interleaved or placed in archival-quality sleeves or envelopes.
3. Protective Enclosures
Each item must be enclosed in an archival-quality envelope, folder, or suitable protective container, or wrapped in acid-free tissue. All enclosures should be clearly labeled in pencil to assist future interpretation.
4. Deacidification
If paper materials present acidity concerns, deacidification may be considered. While commercial spray products are available, consultation with a professional conservator is recommended to ensure proper treatment.
5. Container Integrity
The time capsule container has been selected to be durable, non-corrosive, and watertight to support long-term preservation.
6. Accessibility of Contents
Items should not require specialized technology or equipment for interpretation. Electronic media (e.g., discs, digital storage devices) are discouraged due to the likelihood of technological obsolescence.
7. Documentation and Recordkeeping
The contents of the time capsule will be carefully documented. A complete inventory will be created in duplicate, with one copy sealed within the capsule and one retained in official records. External labeling of the capsule will be completed using permanent materials, and records will be maintained in multiple secure locations.
8. Materials to Avoid
Plastic materials should be avoided due to uncertain long-term stability and potential degradation. This includes plastics used as informational media (e.g., CDs, videotapes).
9. Prohibited Items
Food, plant materials, and any living organisms will not be accepted.
10. Review and Acceptance
All submissions are subject to review by the designated selection committee, which retains final authority over items included in the time capsule.
The City of Algood reserves the right to accept or reject any submission and to amend these guidelines as necessary to ensure the integrity and success of the project.
