With Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner and Head Shaving to raise money for two great local charities! Patrick's Day 2009 with low expectations, the Shamrock Shave benefit has quickly grown to become a major fundraising event at St. On Saturday, March 12, 2011 43 men, women and children shaved their heads to raise money for community families in need and for cancer research. This year’s Shamrock Shave
combined fun, food, entertainment, and head shaving in an effort to raise money for two very worthwhile causes. 100% of all event proceeds and pledges will be donated to the St. Vincent DePaul Society, to support community families in need, and to Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation. This year, over 500 were in attendance with over 450 meals being served. The 2011 Shamrock Shave raised over $27,000. Over just three years, the Shave has raised over $77,000 for charity. According to Kal Gibron, Event Chairperson, “The Shamrock Shave is a unique fundraising event that brings the entire community together to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, while also raising money for two great causes. This year, once again, the Shave exceeded all expectations. We raised even more money for charity, shaved even more heads, and had even more 'Irish' family fun.”
The event traditionally starts with a traditional Irish dinner of corned beef and cabbage at 5:30 PM in St. Margaret Mary’s School Gymnasium, with dinner proceeds also being donated to charity. The “Mane” festivities begin at 6:45 PM with head shavings staggered throughout the evening. Stylists from HIP Salon in Schaumburg and other local hair salons have volunteered their time to perform the shavings, and other local businesses sponsor the event with food and monetary donations. Between the head shavings, “Kingsfold,” one of Chicagoland’s most renowned Irish bands, performs classic and contemporary favorites. Summers Dance Crew and Mayer School of Irish Dance also perform. A fun-filled famly event, there is also an Irish Jig Contest, a “Best Irish Costume” contest, kid’s activities, door prizes, and raffles all in a fun St. Patrick’s Day party atmosphere. Admission is $2.00 at the door for adults and $1.00 for children, and at no charge with a meal purchase. Margaret Mary Education Center is at the corner of Eastgate and Algonquin Rd.
