The Institute for Electronic Arts is an art and technology research studio within the School of Art and Design, NYSCC, Alfred University, New York.

The iea offers time, space, facilities, and support for artists to engage with their research proposals. IEA programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and the Schein-Joseph Endowment. The IEA encourages and supports projects that involve interactive multi-media systems, experimental sonic/video production, digital imaging, and publications. The IEA is committed to developing cultural interactions spurred by technological experimentation and artistic investigations.

On Sunday, October 18, 2026 Ranger Liu (RANGER) completed their three-week New Media residency with us!   Ranger said the following about their residency: “I completed a rough draft of a 20-minute sonic composition for a sculptural 7-channel speaker array, including both the notated composition and an audio recording. I developed graphic notations and compositional processes based on the Thue-Morse mathematical sequence. For the audio, I recorded sounds from the modular synths as well as my own speaking voice and vocalizations. In the first two weeks of their residency, Ranger Liu (RANGER) has spent their time constructing a sonic composition using iea equipment as well as speakers they’re building for a larger sculptural piece.

In celebration of 30 years of the iea, over 350 visiting artists, community projects, exhibitions, and international partnerships, we are excited to offer two limited edition prints featuring key figures in the formation of the iea – Professor’s William Contino and Andrew Deutsch.

Each artist has agreed to produce an edition of 30 prints to generate funds to support future artist-in-residences attendance at Alfred, engagement with students and the public, all within the New York State College of Ceramics.
This is your opportunity to own a Contino or Deutsch artwork and celebrate their retirement from the Division of Expanded Media!

On Sunday, September 20, 2026 Mehdi Darvishi (Mehdi Darvishi) completed his three-week Print+New Media with us!

Mehdi’s process begins with a completely textured copper plate, which is then intensely burnished and polished back to reveal grays and whites, tonal shifts in the composition. One plate can be worked numerous times to develop a series and expand the conversation. A combination of ink roller application and hand wiping maintains the rich compositions.

In the first two weeks of his residency, Mehdi Darvishi (Mehdi Darvishi) has been busy in the print studio working with his self titled process: reductive mezzotint and printing proofs. In a collaboration with the Performing Arts Division, Matias Homar (Mati Homar) brought his Listening Otherwise class to the iea to explore the theremin.

Students were able to play the theremin and see its inner workings after studying theremin performers such as Clara Rockmore.

On Sunday, August 30, 2026 Ali Santana (Ali Santana) completed his three-week New Media residency with us! Through his time with the iea, Ali continued work on his ongoing project ‘Black Man with a Movie Camera’, which he will continue as part of a large-scale immersive assemblage.  Ali said the following about his residency: “This residency allowed me the time and resources to experiment with different techniques and resume projects that have been on hold. I made use of dedicated studio time to experiment and explore new processes. In the first two weeks of his residency, Ali Santana (Ali Santana) has spent his time reviewing and editing 16mm archival film footage, mixing projections, and creating the soundtrack for his ‘Black Man with a Movie Camera’ project.
