Set in beautiful Hawaii Nei we close one more season on the Girls Hawaii Youth Impact Program. We had 75 graduating girls who engaged in various team building and leadership opportunities alongside their military mentors and UH Wahine Basketball team.

The girls were given some inspiration and influential advice from numerous female guest speakers, highlighting their personal journeys to success in their own lives and careers. Lt Colonel BJ Itoman, former UH Wahine Basketball player and current reserve pilot, joined us with Major Susan Weeks to highlight their journeys in sports throughout their academic career; both making the decision to become pilots in the Air Force Reserves. Jake Shimabukuro, world renowned ukulele player, came in to share his story with the girls. He faced adveristy growing up in Hawaii to a single mother, and his story resonated with many of our young girls. While we had the privilege of hearing him play ukulele, we also got to experience his handmade portable soundboard, really tying together our STEM programming and technological influence. Our most impactful speaker, Lt General Laura Lenderman, Deputy Commander of the Pacific Air Forces, highlighted the 3 L’s: “Listening with a full heart, Loving my teammates and my organization, and Lifting up those around me”

The girls enthusiasm and dedication carried over into their testing. They were exposed to performance language through English Language Arts teacher, Joe Lileikis who artfully ties together sports short stories with STEM and science to help his fellow DOE teachers build a sport focused curriculum that teaches the science, technology, and math behind basketball. The results of this curriculum produced an average 81% increase in performance in testing on English, Science, and Math.

The UH Wahine Basketball team hosted the program, and brought many exciting learning experiences, on and off the court, for the girls. An emphasis on continuing to build confidence through off the court activities, the team hosted two Improv classes, two yoga classes, and a collaboration with the Hawaiian Studies Department. These activities helped to build confidence and comradery off the court, which shined through during their basketball showcase to their parents. However, the dance battle was probably one of the biggest highlights for many of the girls and allowed many whose primary focus of expression may not be sport, to really find comfort and confidence amongst their peers.

During our closing program, we celebrated the girls for a variety of accomplishments, ranging from Excellence in STEM and leadership, to perseverance and on-court performance. SGM Canady and his team of military mentors worked alongside UH Wahine Basketball Head Coach Laura Beeman and her team of Basketball players and support personnel to celebrate the development of these girls’ dreams, highlighted by their dream cards and their engagement throughout the program in order to develop their skills on and off the court. The Hawaii YIP Program Director, Ziggy Ramil, closed the program with a final message for the girls to put their dream cards close so they are encouraged to keep dreaming big and working towards those big dreams.

Our Girls Hawaii Youth Impact program was visited today by several inspiring special guests. First on the line up to share her story was Lieutenant General Laura L. Lenderman, deputy commander for the Pacific Air Force. She discussed the military hierarchy, the core values, and the importance of respect and discipline, not only in her military career but also as an athlete and a student. She shared her career path from sports to the Air Force, emphasizing leadership, teamwork, discipline, and selfless service that she learned during sport and how the team work prepared her for an amazing military career.
Lt. Gen Lenderman then discussed three fundamental principles that helped her through her time in the Air Force:
- Listening to teammates and subordinates to understand and inspire them
- Loving the people around you so much that you want them to be better.
- Lifting people up always; coming into the room with a smile, even when the times are tough. Being that light for others even when you may have personal obstacles to overcome.

Mahalo to Lt Gen Lenderman for her time, her story, and for being an inspiration to the young ladies of our program. We look forward to seeing her again soon!

A Day in the Life of Hawaii Girls YIP

July 17th, 2024. Another day kicks off at Hawaii YIP Girls Program where our US military mentors meet our 75 girls at the bus stop across the island to start their trek to the University of Hawaii to begin another day of personal growth, STEM based academics, trust exercises, and various activities hosted by the UH Wahine Basketball team.

When the girls arrive at UH, they excitedly jump into their groups where they have friends that they may have ridden in with or have found new friends from across the island to learn, grow, and play with for the duration of the program. They change into their uniforms and grab their breakfast, which today is a local treat coming from Liliha Bakery, one of our many local restaurants that provide a total of over 5000 meals for Boys and Girls YIP.

After breakfast the day truly starts. They break up into their groups and work with their military mentors to discuss ethos and values, and for today they work on personal courage. The girls take some time to reflect on what values mean to them, how it comes up in their lives, and take time to share with their peers so there is a deeper understanding of what it means to each girl. These values and ethos will come to life when they work on their Dream Cards— an illustration of what they learned from the program and what they hope to accomplish on and off the court in their lives.

Our DOE teachers take over from there— interacting with the girls on the court about trajectory in their free throws and how to use science to make them better on the court. When they return to the classroom, the teachers work on action and sport centered vocabulary through short stories, and the math to support the STEM information they learn on the court.

After a break for lunch with the Wahine Basketball team and military mentors, the students have a yoga class today, focusing on balance and focus alongside the physical benefits. Three instructors from Project Koa yoga walk them through multiple poses until they get to Shavasana. On other days they have had improv classes or Hawaiian Studies, all to focus on building confidence and interest outside of sport.

While they enjoy this time, the girls are eager to put on their tennis shoes and hit the gym for some time on the court. Their military mentors lead warmups and then work alongside the girls for some 3v3 on the court. They’ve been working on their free throws, three-pointers, and defense so they get a chance to apply it in smaller games. The girls are extra excited to watch Wahine Basketball Players take on their military mentors… but we won’t mention who the winner of that last match was.

They excitedly exit the gym, celebrating their teams and get ready to wrap up their day, changing out of the uniforms and grabbing a snack from the YIP staff before loading onto buses to head home. Most girls won’t get home until around 6 p.m., where they recap the day to their parents who will get to see all their kids’ efforts come together during our last day showcase where parents will watch them play and get recognized for their personal growth during the program.
