This week at Senior Services of Alexandria was filled with connection, wellness, and meaningful community engagement!

Owen Albrecht from DOT Paratransit joined Bingo at Burke Branch Library to share valuable transportation resources with participants. Iris and Olivia also represented SSA at the ACT Racial Equity Celebration.

Keren continued to promote wellness through an engaging exercise class at Claridge House. SSA was also proud to be represented at two important community events: Mary Lee Anderson and Tanya attended the Inova Grant Luncheon, where they connected with Dr. Rina Bansal, President of Inova Alexandria and former SSA Board member, as well as Alexandria Mayor Alyia Gaskins. At the same time, Iris and Marshall attended the Rotary Grant Luncheon, reconnecting with former SSA Board members Maribeth Bersani and Jack Fannon.

Tesfaye supported both wellness and collaboration at Claridge House by hosting an exercise class with Kevin and hosting a meeting with ACT. Iris, Olivia, and Tesfaye also expanded outreach efforts at the ALATE Mini Health Fair, connecting residents with important health resources, while Marshall attended the community cookout at Andrew Adkins, building relationships and fostering connection.

What happens if you or a loved one can no longer make important financial or medical decisions?

That was one of the many questions explored at Alexandria's 15th Annual Senior Law Day, where more than 225 older adults, caregivers, family members, and community advocates gathered to learn how to age with confidence, clarity, and peace of mind.

Hosted by Senior Services of Alexandria and the Alexandria Bar Association, the annual event tackled some of the most important issues facing older adults today, including estate planning, powers of attorney, advance directives, financial scams, public benefits, caregiving, and healthcare resources.

For attendee Annie Hall, the event provided valuable information she could put to use immediately.

"I learned about some options I hadn't known for my own financial protection and legacy, especially as relates to mental capacity, and to double-check for my 90-year-old mother with dementia," Hall said.

Experts warned attendees about the growing sophistication of financial scams targeting seniors and shared practical strategies for protecting assets and avoiding fraud. Attorneys also discussed the critical legal documents every adult should consider having in place before a crisis occurs.

The event's theme, "Confidence and Clarity as You Age," resonated throughout the day as participants gained knowledge, asked questions, and connected with local resources designed to help them remain independent and informed.

As one attendee put it, one of the best parts of the day wasn't just the information—it was seeing so many people come together to learn.

🎉 What a wonderful Senior Law Day!

Last Saturday, June 6, Senior Services of Alexandria and the Alexandria Bar Association hosted the 15th Annual Senior Law Day, and we were thrilled to welcome over 225 attendees!

The morning was filled with valuable information, helpful resources, great conversations, and of course delicious pastries, coffee, and juice. It was truly wonderful to see so many of you in person, connecting with neighbors and learning together.

This year’s program, “Confidence and Clarity as You Age,” featured important presentations on:
🔹 Protecting yourself from financial scams
🔹 Understanding public benefits
🔹 Planning ahead with essential estate planning documents

A big thank-you to our speakers, moderators, volunteers, partners, and everyone who attended and helped make this event such a success.

Presentations and the full program are now available on the SSA website for anyone who would like to review or share the information.
