Brothers, friends, and family of Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22 made the trip up to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis to pay our respects at the crypt of Brother John Paul Jones.
Beyond his incredible legacy as the “Father of the American Navy,” Brother Jones carried a deep connection to Freemasonry throughout his life. Raised to the degree of Master Mason in 1770 at St. Bernard’s Lodge in Scotland, his journey in the Craft later led him to the famous Les Neuf Sœurs Lodge in Paris, where he sat alongside Brother Benjamin Franklin. When Jones passed away in France in 1792, it was his Masonic brethren who helped secure his burial, preserving his memory until his remains were brought home to rest under the chapel in Annapolis a century later.
It was a privilege to stand at his sarcophagus in quiet reflection and honor a Brother whose courage on the high seas helped forge our Nation.
