At this Saturday's Cenla Fly Fishing Festival, our raffle and Gamblers Draw will feature rods, reels, fly lines, fly tying materials, and much more. One of the popular items are boxes of flies tied by some of the state's - and elsewhere - top fly tyers. Here's a couple boxes that came in today from our friend and deer hair specialist Kevin 'Musicdoc' Andry.

A reminder that this Monday, May 11th, is our monthly fly tying session. Rapides Westside Library, 6:30pm, with casting at 5:30pm (weather permitting).

From the KFF Tying Committee:
With summer approaching, we move into our bass and warm water series of patterns, and this month, we are tying a Bass Gurgler. This top water pattern is a variation by Space Coast Flies of the popular Gartside Gurgler. Space Coast created it as a redfish pattern, but we will change the colors and modify it very slightly for a bass and warmwater pattern. Bass Gurgler photo (photo is of redfish colors – we will tie a bass color scheme).

Though the pattern has 7 material tie-ins, all are pretty straightforward and much easier than tying the we did earlier this year. If you have 140 denier chartreuse thread that would be perfect. Otherwise, olive or black 140 denier or 6/0 will work just fine. If time and materials allow, we will tie two copies of the pattern.

You will be cutting a wire-core dubbing brush, so bring a pair of old scissors or small wire cutters if you have them.

As always, all materials other than thread will be provided, and we will have several sets of tools for any who do not have their own. And if you have never tied, we can pair you with someone who can help.

We will continue to broadcast the sessions via Zoom and YouTube Live for those who cannot attend, and we will record the session for future reference. The YouTube livestream and recording will be on the Kisatchie Fly Fishers YouTube channel.

Our 2026 Spring Picnic was this evening. Thanks to the cooks and everyone who brought sides and desserts. The weather was hotter than usual but a good breeze kept it comfortable and the mosquitoes away. The squirrels made several attempts to steal our food but Carlton managed to fend them off.
