More than a thousand student entrepreneurs entered the Global Student Entrepreneur Awards, and only 22 earned the chance to pitch on the global stage.

In Cape Town, the judges and mentors asked the questions no pitch deck can answer for you, about failure, about asking for help, and about what a founder is willing to protect at all costs. Six of them made it to the final round to compete for a share of $100,000.

In 2023, an oil spill devastated coastal villages in the Philippines, destroying the livelihoods of local fishermen. Community members even donated their hair, hoping it would help soak up the oil. Maristela Sandoval decided to build something better.

Working from a bedroom desk with a 3D printer and a $2,000 budget, she engineered ORCAS, autonomous, AI-driven ocean cleanup robots inspired by the design of a Roomba and the way honeybees communicate. Their secret weapon is a natural filter made from coconut husks that separates toxic oil from water.

The Philippine Coast Guard initially told her to just let the diesel melt, but once they saw ORCAS in action, they backed her fully. She has since raised over $300,000 in grants and caught the interest of the Navy.

Jacky Cheng, who runs a B2B marketing agency in Shanghai, has a clear answer: today, what you know wins.

He also does not sugarcoat sales. Anyone can learn the trained side of it, but the instinct for closing a deal is harder to teach, and training alone rarely gets someone there without it.

His advice for a 20-year-old trying to find their people: join entrepreneur competitions, get close to senior founders, and find a real business community.

Abdullah AlSalmani helped build AlAinSat-1, the first satellite built in Al Ain. He was proud of it, and one question stuck with him anyway: why had nobody shown him this path earlier? He built SpacePoint to answer that for the next generation, training more than 2,700 students across four countries to design, build, and operate real satellite systems.

Abaan Ali Ansari grew up deaf, with two older deaf siblings. He moved between a school with accessibility but no quality education, and a mainstream school with quality education but no accessibility. He asked himself a different question: were his abilities the problem, or was it the system? He built UpliftiQ to answer it, sign language to text, live captioning, sign language to speech, and speech to sign language, now reaching more than 1,700 active users and over 10,800 community members across 13 countries, entirely organic.

His company, LOCOL, turns cacao waste into a livestock feed supplement that cuts methane by up to 45%, using just 1% of the feed, at no additional cost to farmers. His goal is not a billion-dollar valuation. It is a billion lives impacted.

Lőrinc Nagy describes his own addiction plainly. Not alcohol, not drugs, his phone, eight hours a day by the time he was 18.
