Face Off Feature: Sally Velez, NOVA’s social media manager

A military family new to the DMV in 2022, Sally and her family found their way to the Ice Dogs because they were looking for a team for their son. They quickly became part of the Ice Dogs family and enjoyed the journey from watching their son go from player to finding his passion as a goalie.

One of her favorite hockey memories (and most stressful) is watching her son face his first shootout. For Sally, youth hockey is all about friendship (both adult and youth), memories, and watching kids grow into fantastic individuals. Her hockey weekend essentials? Coffee or an energy drink, and mouth guards.

Fun fact: Sally once tried on the Caps Stanley Cup ring! 💍

Here comes the next generation of hockey players! Caps Youth Hockey Development

09/14/2026

What a great Ice Dog Night! We opened with our 8Us on the ice, and we ended with our oldest age groups matching up in a friendly but still hard-fought scrimmage. In between, we ate pizza and treats, every age group got some ice time, we swapped “new to you” gear, and we chucked pucks! Special thanks to the Mount Vernon Ice Director Laura Seal with the Fairfax County Park Authority for joining us for the puck drop to kick off the festivities! We 💙♥️ the Mount Vernon Ice Arena and the start of the hockey season!

Today was the day! Young girls from around the DMV tried hockey for free, and we enjoyed every aspect of it! Thank you to the parents who signed their children up, thank you to our Ice Dog athletes who volunteered, thank you to our Ice Dog parent volunteers, and thank you Capitals Youth Hockey Development for creating such an event!
