The Alexandria Department of Human Services is thrilled to kick off another joyful season of Holiday Sharing! As they prepare to spread cheer to families in our community, they're looking for enthusiastic Holiday Sharing Elves to join them in making magic happen.

During October weekends, families can register their children to receive gifts. The Alexandria Department of Human Services needs volunteers who are comfortable using computers and enjoy engaging with children and families. Polk graduates, sharing some sad news here.

Our Polk community continues to mourn the loss of our beloved Mrs. Jamie Pittman.

Mrs. Pittman touched the lives of so many students and families with her warmth, kindness, patience and unwavering dedication. She was also a wonderful advocate for and supporter of the Polk PTA, always showing up for our school community with joy and heart.

We are incredibly grateful for the many years she gave to Polk and the lasting impact she made on our students, families and staff. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

For those who wish to celebrate her life, Mrs. Pittman’s memorial service will be held Friday, October 9 at 10:00 AM.

Mrs. Pittman had a special love for flowers and gardens. In her memory, the Polk family is planning a lasting tribute this spring, with the hope of planting a tree on school grounds in her honor. Additional details will be shared as plans are finalized.

We continue to hold Mrs. Pittman’s family, friends, colleagues, students and all who loved her in our thoughts.

Help a child Learn to Read! Become a Book Buddy!

The Alexandria Tutoring Consortium (ATC) is in need of volunteer reading tutors to help K-2nd graders in Alexandria City Public Schools learn to read.

30- to 40-minute tutoring slots are available once or twice a week, M-Th, between 8 a.m and 2 p.m.

You don't need to be a teacher to do this — ATC's highly qualified staff will provide training, materials and hands-on support — but you do need to care about helping a child and commit to volunteering once or twice a week, October through May.
