Practical Tips to Kickstart Your Academic Career

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This panel will be presented by four past chairs of the Young Physicians Section who will discuss their career paths. As these past chairs age out of YPS, pathways for their activities and leadership in academia will be presented. Topics will include: accomplishing successful research, establishing focused clinics programs, lessons learned from YPS leadership, and furthering involvement in AAOHNS leadership after YPS. Equally important, suggestions on balancing a fulfilling family/home life will be shared. All panelists are married with young children; the difficulties met daily in supporting work/life balance while meeting academic expectations will be explored. Pitfalls to avoid and what we learned from our failures will also be discussed.

We have an exciting program especially for Young Physicians, Sunday, September 11, starting at 3:00 p.m. ET.

Plan to attend the YPS General Assembly and inspirational lecture on how physicians can “thrive” instead of “survive”. Afterwards, relax and network at the Iron Hill Brewery adjacent to the Convention Center, sponsored by Panacea Financial.

Each month we want to highlight YPS members who have made significant impacts advancing our field. Dr. David F Smith MD, PhD is a pediatric otolaryngologist who specializes in complex sleep disorders and circadian rhythm disorders. He is personable, humble and selfless. After finishing two separate fellowships (pediatric otolaryngology and sleep medicine), he joined the faculty at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical (CCHMC) and the University of Cincinnati in the Department of Otolaryngology. Within his first 3 years of faculty appointment, he established and is co-director of the Center for Circadian Medicine, which is one of the first of its kind in the United States. His commitment to advancing circadian rhythm and sleep medicine research is evidenced by his numerous grants and awards he has received multiple NIH awards, multiple CORE grants, internal grants, and a career development award from the Triological Society. He has published more than 60 manuscripts and 7 book chapters. He is known globally for his work and routinely presents around the world. On top of this he helps run the educational and research programs for the CCHMC pediatric otolaryngology fellowship. He is constantly mentoring medical students, graduate students, residents, and fellows and always takes time for others. He is one of the premier researchers in translational sleep medicine and is an outstanding member of the YPS.
