The FRA is dragging its feet on expanding automated track inspection technology — a proven tool that finds defects earlier, prevents accidents, and keeps workers and communities safer. This delay puts U.S. Department of Transportation and Secretary Sean Duffy at odds with the administration’s own goals on AI, modernization, and deregulation.
Blocking this waiver would mean prioritizing political pressure over real safety gains. Even the DOT’s own Volpe Center has pushed for this technology for decades, and leading analysts call approval a “no-brainer.” Consumers deserve regulators who follow evidence — not those who stall innovation to appease special interests.
It’s time for USDOT to put public safety, transparency, and common sense first. Approve the automated track inspection waiver now.
