Arts Amplifying Each Voice

Heard uses writing, visual art, improvisation, storytelling, and other creative practices to help people discover, strengthen, and share their voices. Heard contracts with local artists to teach creativity and life skills through art to people in need who may be in recovery, survivors of domestic violence or sexual assault, LGBTQA, older adults, immigrant, incarcerated, or transitioning from incarceration or homelessness, through its partnerships with Alexandria and other area nonprofit and local government organizations.

Creativity is not an extra. It is a life skill. 🎨

Research from 2024 shows that creative activities can strengthen mental health, build self-confidence, and support emotional resilience for young people, especially those facing trauma or instability.

Art also supports learning, belonging, and future opportunity. At HEARD, that is why we create trauma-informed, artist-led spaces where youth and families can build confidence, resilience, and joy.

Who leads Heard’s programs?

Professional artists, bringing trauma-informed creative practice into every workshop.

Through visual arts, creative writing, improv, and public speaking, they work alongside youth and adults navigating housing insecurity, incarceration, trauma, and economic instability. They create space for self-expression, emotional regulation, and personal narrative ownership.

Over 300 youth participated in HEARD workshops in 2025.

This back-to-school drive helps fill individual art kits with sketchbooks, pencils, paints, and other essentials for children and teens in Northern Virginia. Each kit helps a young person show up ready to create, build confidence, and find their voice. 🎨

“I never thought my words mattered.”

In HEARD’s creative writing workshops, J found more than a place to write. They found community, confidence, and the freedom to speak in their own voice.

After sharing their story, J said, “I realized people listened and cared. It made me feel seen and valued.” That kind of shift is showing up across our programs too: over 500 participants and 200 hours of classes, with 87% reporting increased self-worth and confidence.
