Historic preservation in the world, specifically, Japan: NPI's Executive Assistant (EA) just finished reading The Thousand Autumns of Jacob De Zoet, by David Mitchell. It is historical fiction; the setting - end of the 18th-century, Edo Period, in a real place called Dejima, an artificial island completed in 1636, just off the shore of Nagasaki, where the Dutch East India Company set up shop. Whenever reading historical fiction, EA researches online to find out which part is history and which part is fiction and discovered that Dejima has gone through/is in a restoration process. Not only does this link cover the multi-part restoration of this history-rich, fan-shaped island, it covers history of the site and visiting information.
