Waynewood was once part of Mount Vernon Plantation, and is situated on what was River Farm, one of the five farms that made up the plantation. In 1754, when George Washington became the sole owner of Mount Vernon, he began acquiring additional tracts until the plantation grew in size from the original 2,126 acres to more than 8,000 acres. All five farms were highly developed and well cultivated. O

ne of them was River Farm – consisting of 1,806 acres and purchased in 1769. Using present landmarks, the original farm was roughly bounded on the north by what is now “Wellington,” to the east by the Potomac river, and running diagonally south and west, Little Hunting Creek. An electric car line, established in 1892, ran from Washington, DC, to Mount Vernon until the George Washington Memorial Parkway opened in 1932. Gosnell, Inc. and consists of approximately 301 acres. The community was formally opened in 1957. The history of the neighborhood plays a vital part in the identity of its residents. If you have lived in the neighborhood for many years, the neighborhood history is a heartfelt reminder of days gone by. If you have just come to call the neighborhood home, it is a way to learn more about the new community you have joined.
