Former T.C. Williams Titan Pens Memoir About His Journey
to Head Coach of History-Making High School Girls Basketball Team

Foreword by Titans Former Head Coach the Late Herman Boone

Hope Mills, NC – Collin Eugene (Coach Gene) Arrington, former running back for the Alexandria, Virginia, T.C. Williams Titans football team, made famous by the critically acclaimed movie Remember the Titans, has released his memoir.

Rise of the Wolverines: The Making of a Titan and Beyond chronicles the life of Coach Gene, born into a world of poverty, labels and pessimists. But his adoptive parents (maternal grandparents), Tom and Eva Brown Arrington saw the newborn as a precious gift and guided him onto a path that helped him defy the hand he was dealt.

Arrington was recruited in 1971 as a running back by the late Herman Boone, the renowned head coach of the Titans, whose mentorship he credits for many of his life’s achievements — graduating from college with bachelor’s and master’s degrees and attaining the rank of major in the United States Army. But when he accepted the position as head coach of the Westover High School Wolverines Girls basketball team, Coach Gene embarked on an odyssey that would lead to one of his greatest personal and professional achievements. The Wolverines’ record was 87 losses, 0 wins. But while many saw losers, Coach Gene saw himself, ignored the naysayers, and embraced the challenge. The Wolverines found hope in his hope. He told them they could win. They believed him. Still, not until they believed in themselves did the Wolverines become a formidable team skilled to ride the roller coaster to the height of success, clinching the North Carolina State Championship for the first time in Westover High School’s history. Coach Gene was later celebrated by the communities of Fayetteville and Hope Mills, North Carolina at a citywide tribute where the Westover High School gymnasium was renamed in his honor.

In the book’s foreword, Boone writes, “Although Arrington insists that it was my mentorship that instilled what he needed to endure tough football and to acquire the skills and tenacity necessary to coach his way into history, I credit my friend for his success. Arrington was a good student, an outstanding mentor to youth, and a patriotic American who still takes any opportunity to serve his community. So, I am indeed honored, and nothing could make me prouder than to have played any role in Rise of the Wolverines: The Making of a Titan and Beyond.”

What Coach Gene hopes will resonate from his memoir is this message: “Winning for yourself should never be the mission. Live with a purpose.” And he did just that – looked back, reached back, and gave back to ensure that another youth would gain the opportunity to excel.”
