What does a medical physicist do on Capitol Hill?

Today, AAPM’s Executive Committee answered that question in person — meeting with the offices of Rep. Adam Smith and Senators Ted Cruz, Alex Padilla, Dave McCormick, Chris Van Hollen, and John Fetterman to educate lawmakers about the critical role medical physicists play in patient care.

Our two asks:
🔬 Restore NIST funding to ensure the radiation measurement standards that make cancer treatment safe and precise remain intact
🏥 Cosponsor bipartisan legislation (H.R. 3489 / S. 3771) to address pay disparities that prevent the VA from hiring qualified medical physicists

Today, AAPM’s Executive Committee met with six congressional offices to advocate for the medical physics profession and the patients we serve. Our team made the case for two priorities that matter deeply to our field:

✅ Restoring NIST’s core research funding to protect the measurement standards that make radiation therapy safe and accurate
✅ Passing the VA Medical Physicist Pay Cap Relief Act to help the VA recruit and retain qualified medical physicists
