Peanut Butter for the Hungry

Peanut Butter for the Hungry Peanut Butter for the Hungry is a humanitarian initiative of the U.S. peanut industry to help malnourished children around the world.

Peanut butter is a critical ingredient in a ready-to-use therapeutic food that is the accepted protocol for treating severe acute malnutrition. Ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTF’s) made with peanut butter offer some of the same advantages that regular peanut butter does. They are shelf stable, require no preparation or refrigeration, are nutrient dense and – most importantly, kids love them. Th

e peanut industry has committed financial and intellectual resources to the development of ready-to-use therapeutic foods internationally, especially in the case when these products are made in the regions where they are used.

The APC’s Peanut Butter for the Hungry committee met virtually on July 18th and was led by committee chairman Don Koehler. Jeff Johnson, spoke about the new peanut based product “Nutawi” that was developed for international school feeding; Mark Moore spoke about updates at the MANA facility in Fitzgerald, GA; Lisa Cashman of Crazy Richards Peanut Butter spoke about the company’s partnership with Walmart and Feeding America called “Fight Hunger, Spark Change”; and Greg Grimsley provided an update on the donations by Peanut Proud in 2020. Because the Covid-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented demand at food banks, Peanut Proud has donated 220,400 jars of peanuts to date, more than any other year. Finally, Ryan Lepicier, National Peanut Board, updated the group on marketing activities NPB is undertaking to reach Americans in need.

Great work! But there's still plenty to be done. Peanut Proud is still accepting donations to help the survivors of Hurricane Dorian. peanutproud.org/donations

Thanks to our friends at Peanut Proud, which represents all segments of the peanut industry. Almost 25,000 jars of peanut butter left Georgia on Wednesday en route to the Bahamas, with more to come. Peanut butter is one of the most requested food items in times of crisis because it is nutritious, filling, and requires neither refrigeration nor water for preparation. The Peanut Proud donation is one of many relief supplies being transported by cargo vessels that are part of the partnership between Carnival Corp and Tropical Shipping.
