SLPA’s 6th Regional Event returned to Fairfax, Virginia — where it all began.

Hosted at Merten Hall at George Mason University, this year’s DMV convening centered on one theme: Building Bridges — connecting Somaliland-American professionals, advancing development, and empowering diaspora action.
As SLPA’s founding hub, the DMV holds special significance in our journey. What began here has grown into a national network spanning six regional cities and connecting hundreds of professionals across the country. Bringing the community back to this foundation felt intentional.

Nearly 100 attendees from across the DMV — spanning healthcare, education, engineering, technology, finance, public service, and beyond, gathered alongside students, early-career professionals, and seasoned leaders. The room reflected both experience and ambition.

Discussions moved beyond inspiration into strategy:
• Strengthening education and workforce development through mentorship and technical training
• Investing in agriculture, infrastructure, energy, and local industry

• Creating clearer legal and regulatory pathways to support diaspora investment
• Expanding civic engagement and structured advocacy
• Advancing conversations around recognition, dignity, and long-term economic opportunity

Through small-group dialogue and keynote insights, one message remained clear: diaspora engagement must be organized and strategic; it must be sustainable and rooted in mentorship, investment, advocacy, and collaboration.
What began in the DMV continues to grow far beyond it; building bridges across borders and creating long-term pathways for Somaliland’s development.

Ramadan Mubarak! 🌙

This Ramadan, we’ve teamed up with the Ainabo International Hospital Committee to raise funds for a hospital that will provide much-needed care to Ainabo and the surrounding communities, where distance is a major barrier to healthcare.

By bringing healthcare closer to home, we can save lives and improve health outcomes. Your support can make a real difference.

Donate today through the link in our bio and please share this with your friends and family!

Keeping the Momentum Going – DC, You’re Up Next! (DM for link to register)

After the incredible energy of the 2024 SLPA Conference in Atlanta and our 2025 regional events in NYC, Columbus, Seattle, Minneapolis, & Boston we’re excited to announce our 6th stop: DC!

Our first four regional cities brought together 550+ attendees — and we’re aiming to make DC our biggest yet. Calling all our registered members, professionals, students & community leaders across DC/Maryland/Virginia… this one’s for you.

Boston showed up—and made history!
SLPA’s 5th Regional Event brought together 70+ members, community leaders, and supporters from across New England, with attendees traveling from Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and students joining us from Vermont.

Members of the Boston community shared that this was the first event of this caliber held in the city since the early 1990s—a powerful reminder of the impact that intentional, organized community building can have.

We were honored to gather professionals from diverse fields including healthcare, law, architecture, engineering, accounting, and more, with representation from institutions such as Harvard, MIT, Yale, Middlebury, Dartmouth, Tufts, Cornell, and Columbia—an inspiration for our younger members charting their academic and professional paths.

We opened with remarks from our host Fahima Ali, followed by a beautiful Qur’an recitation by Sheikh Abdiqadir, Imam of New England’s largest mosque (ISB). We also heard from long-standing community leaders representing Massachusetts, Maine, and Connecticut, each sharing reflections on leadership, service, and carrying the torch forward.

Our speaker series featured Sahra Jama, Abaarso alumna and Brandeis graduate, who spoke on resilience, faith, and personal growth, and Abshir Sudi, Middlebury graduate and founder of AHDI, a Boston-founded nonprofit advancing education in Somaliland since 2019.

We proudly presented an Achievement Award for Boston Community Impact, Leadership, and Education to Mubarak, an early SLPA member, Abaarso alumnus, and MIT graduate.

Our keynote speaker, Dr. Jamal Ali Hussein—former Citigroup Managing Director, Harvard MBA, and Johns Hopkins PhD—closed with powerful reflections on legacy, personal development, and sustained collective action for Somaliland and our local communities.

We wrapped up with a shared meal from Nubian Markets and continued conversations at Luzuri Turkish Café.

Grateful to our local organizers and volunteers for making this impactful gathering possible.

🎥 Video recap coming soon.
