Some days, the kindness of our community takes our breath away.

Thanks to the generosity of Capital One in McLean, VA and Foster Love, the Fund for Alexandria’s Child received 35 brand‑new 20" Schwinn bikes and helmets for our foster youth. This incredible gift is already making a difference in ways that matter.

Before we even picked them up, 10 bikes had already been claimed by DCHS social workers for their kids. And today, something unforgettable happened.

A mom visited the ALX Closet on behalf of her family of ten — including eight children — after a devastating fire destroyed their home. They lost absolutely everything. She shared how hard it’s been for the kids, especially after losing all their toys and belongings.

When she learned we had bikes to give, her entire face lit up. She couldn’t stop smiling. She kept saying she couldn’t wait for her kids to see their bikes when she brought them home. In a moment filled with loss, you gave this family a reason to smile again.

Capital One and Foster Love, thank you for the joy you’ve brought to this family and to so many of our foster youth. These bikes will go quickly — and they will make a huge difference for every child who receives one.

Every now and then, we’re reminded of just how big a child’s heart can be.

A small group of young friends sent us a handwritten note and six dollars to help children in foster care. They didn’t have to do it. They simply wanted to. And in that moment, they showed us something beautiful. Their gift wasn’t about the amount. It was about children helping children… kids lifting up other kids they’ve never met, just because they believe everyone deserves to feel cared for.

To Nora, Mary Beth, Sophie, and Makayla — your generosity lit up our day. You reminded us that compassion starts early, and that even the smallest hands can make a big difference. ❤️

Graduation is a milestone many young people dream about—but for foster youth, it’s a milestone far too few reach. Nationally, only about 55% of youth in foster care graduate high school, making each accomplishment nothing short of extraordinary.

Last Friday, The Fund for Alexandria’s Child put out a call to help us honor six incredible City of Alexandria foster youth who beat the odds and graduated from high school. By Tuesday, every single item on our list—plus extras—had been purchased and delivered.

Your generosity moved us. The speed, the kindness, the willingness to show up for young people who don’t always have someone cheering them on—it reminded us of what community truly means.

To everyone who purchased an item, shared our list, emailed it to friends, or supports us day after day—thank you. Because of you, we were able to celebrate them in a way that made them feel valued, seen, and deeply supported. You made this celebration unforgettable.

A huge thank you to Curcio Law for participating in a national initiative to support children in foster care — and for choosing The Fund for Alexandria’s Child as a partner.

Their team provided an amazing collection of essentials for our youth, including toiletries, skin and hair care products for all hair types and skin tones, toothbrush kits, diapers, and other essentials that will make an immediate and meaningful difference for the children and youth we serve. These items are exactly what our foster youth need most, and their generosity will make a real difference.

I had the pleasure of meeting the Curcio Law team, and they were warm, welcoming, and truly committed to giving back. We are so grateful for their support and proud to partner with organizations that lead with heart.

This year, six foster youth (3 males and 3 females) in our community crossed the stage and received their high school diplomas. Their journeys have all looked different—some smooth, some incredibly challenging—but each of them reached this milestone with resilience and heart.

For many of our youth in foster care, graduation can feel bittersweet. They don’t always have family cheering in the crowd or gifts waiting at home. That’s why we’ve been working to create personalized graduation bundles that remind them they matter and that their community sees their hard work.

Something truly special happened recently.

Charlie, an 8th grader with a huge heart, reached out to the Fund for Alexandria’s Child with a simple question: “Can I fundraise for new stuffed animals for the kids you serve?” For his 8th‑grade project at St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School, he chose to focus on supporting foster youth — making sure they have comfort items to help with big feelings, tough transitions, and moments when they need to feel safe.

Charlie and his mom arrived with 75 large stuffed animals, including weighted ones. The joy on his face said everything. You could see how much this project meant to him.

Thank you, Charlie, for showing what compassion in action looks like. To the Fund, this means the world. To our kids, it will mean even more.
