“Vision Zero for the Balkans” Regional Road Safety Conference & Technology Showcase

The second United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 also marks the start of new forms of international collaboration to avert the continuing and growing epidemic of road traffic injuries, responsible for 1,350,000 fatalities per year. Key to the success of further efforts is the acknowledgement that no level of death or serious injury is acceptable – known as the Vision Zero approach.

The Balkan region currently experiences a much higher proportion of road crash-related deaths & serious injuries per million inhabitants than the EU27. These losses - in lives, human capital, and infrastructure - represent an enormous cost for communities to bear, and they are largely preventable. Improving road safety through transformative approaches that create a safe mobility system that is forgiving of human error must become a priority for the region’s policy makers and transport professionals.

Conference Objectives

Promote the uptake of “Vision Zero” policies and make a compelling case for safety investments

Focus on risk factors and road deficiencies that lead to injuries among vulnerable road users

Review how advanced technology can be leveraged to support traffic safety

Showcase proven active and passive safety solutions

Support stakeholder alignment

Advance regional cooperation

Who Should Attend

Road & Transportation Agency Executives

Civil Society Stakeholders

Road Safety Engineers & Auditors

Infrastructure Developers

Traffic Engineers & Modelers

Suppliers and Distributors of Road Safety Products

The basic philosophy of the IRF for the past years has been that road infrastructure development is the true key to economic and social progress in any country in the world. Multiple studies have proven that a country’s gross domestic product can be directly tied to the level of sophistication of its infrastructure. Since 1948, the IRF has been promoting technology transfer to developing countries.
The IRF Fellowship Program has provided education opportunities at some of the finest institutions of higher learning in the world to individual Fellows from various countries with experts and leaders in the road industry as mentors. These Fellows return home to participate in responsible leadership roles in their countries, and their strong influence has affected the development of transportation systems.
In order for IREF to continue offering the educational support, experiences, and network that it has provided to more than 1250 students from around the world, additional financial resources are needed. With a few donations, the IREF will have the resources in place to make an even bigger impact on the road industry and its next generation of leaders.
The good news is you can make a difference by helping the IREF!

Three of our 2023 IRF Road Scholars, from left to right Douglas Mocelin, Ryan Salameh, and Ashraf Alrajhi, participating in our Annual Hat Exchange. Each Fellow brings their own hat with personal meaning, and after presenting it to the group exchanges it with another’s. Here Ashraf is debating which hat he wants to take home, Douglas’ or Ryan’s! On behalf of the International Road Federation, I wanted to update you on how the IRF Fellowship Program is doing. We have now graduated 1,500 Fellows through the IRF Fellowship Program, representing students from 119 countries worldwide. It truly is an amazing feat and unique in its mission.

While continuing on the successes from past years, the number of students in each Fellowship Class has fluctuated based on contributions from individuals like you. The past few years have seen fewer Fellows go through this amazing program, partially due to the effects of the pandemic.

As we look forward in 2023, we ask you, as an IRF Fellow, to once again participate in this year’s IRF Fellows Valentine’s Day Fundraising Appeal. The Fellowship needs your support more than ever. As we celebrate our 75th Anniversary, we hope that we can count on you to support the “Crown Jewel” of IRF.

While there is no set amount on how much we ask you to donate, we understand that your financial situation is unique to you and nobody else. We ask that you make a contribution that makes sense, because every dollar received helps someone just like you with their educational dreams. If you can contribute a significant amount, this is the right time to do it to support the program.

Our request is no different than when you went through our Fellowship Program. Individuals like you made it happen back then, and you can make it happen now for another young student. Hopefully, it will be the starting point for their career, just like the IRF Fellowship Program was for you.

Thank you in advance for continuing to allow us to grow the IRF Fellowship Program. This amazing Program must continue to grow and flourish. Thank you for your generosity.

To contribute, please visit our website at https://irf.wufoo.com/forms/w1k5z4y30a8ra4q/ No contribution is too small, and no donation is too large. We sincerely appreciate your consideration of our request!
