🌱🧡 Look at that harvest!

Meet Fatmata Turay, a mother of three from Yenkesa, Sierra Leone.
After losing her husband, Fatmata struggled to grow enough food to support her family and cover her children's school expenses.

But through agricultural training and support from our local partner, the Faith Healing Development Organization (FHDO), she's been able to improve her farming, sell her produce, and even earn money to help get her children back in school.

🧡 See how learning new farming skills is making a difference for Fatmata and her family.

🌱 One good harvest can feed a family. But what if they could keep growing more food year after year?

That's what we're helping 100 farmers in Sierra Leone work toward!
Through our local partner FHDO, they'll learn better farming methods and business skills to help them grow more food, sell what they don't need, and earn money to support their families.

As FHDO program manager Francis A.B. Rogers explains, the goal is to help farmers earn income that will “enable them to continue farming.”

And when farmers grow more food, their families benefit, local markets have more to sell, and more money stays in the community!

🧡 Your support can help make a difference that lasts beyond one harvest.

🍲🌿 Have you ever tried cassava leaf stew?

It's a well-loved dish in Sierra Leone, made with finely chopped cassava leaves cooked into a rich stew, often with palm oil, seasonings, and fish or meat.
It's commonly served over rice, bringing together two important ingredients in Sierra Leonean cooking.

Cassava isn't just valued for its roots. Its leaves are also used to make delicious meals!

🧡 Would you try cassava leaf stew? Or have you had it before? Tell us in the comments!

🌱 Over the next few months, 100 aspiring farmers — 75 women and 25 young people — will learn better agricultural practices to help them grow more food!
This is all thanks to our local partner in Sierra Leone, Faith Healing Development Organization (FHDO).

They'll learn different farming methods and receive tools, fertilizer, and other supplies to help them grow more food on their own land.
And the goal isn't just to have one good harvest. With the right skills and resources, these farmers can feed their families, sell what they grow, and earn money for expenses like their children's school fees.

🧡 See how this program is helping local farmers work toward greater self-sufficiency.

🌍 Fighting poverty is at the heart of why Bread and Water for Africa® exists.

For us, that means working with local partners to help people build something that lasts—whether that’s clean water, the ability to grow more food, access to healthcare, or an education.

A hand up, not simply a handout.

This International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, we’re proud to continue helping communities build greater self-sufficiency for the future. 🧡

🍽️ There’s more than one way to help put food on the table.

Sometimes it starts with a farmer learning how to grow more food on a small plot of land.

Sometimes it’s an orphanage growing vegetables, raising chickens, or farming fish to help feed the children who live there.
And sometimes it’s as simple as making sure a student gets a meal during the school day.

Across the countries where we work, the programs may look different, but the goal is the same: help more people have reliable access to nutritious food. 🧡

This World Food Day, we’re celebrating the farmers, local partners, caregivers, and communities doing that work every day.

💬 Which part of our food programs would you like us to show you more of—farms, school meals, or food grown at our partner children’s homes?

🌱 So much of the work of feeding a family begins with women.

Across the communities we serve in Africa, women are planting crops, tending farms, feeding their families, and earning income from what they grow.

Through our agriculture programs, Bread and Water for Africa® works with local partners to provide women with training, seeds, tools, irrigation, and other resources that can help them grow more and build a more reliable source of food and income.

This International Day of Rural Women, we’re celebrating the women doing this work every day—and helping more of them have the resources to keep growing. 🧡

🌱 We talk a lot about “food self-sustainability.” But what does that actually mean?

Simply put, it means helping people build a reliable source of food that can
continue long after our initial support.

For a smallholder farmer, that might mean learning a better way to grow crops, receiving seeds and tools to get started, and eventually growing enough to feed their family and sell the extra at a local market.

For a children’s home, it might mean starting a farm, installing irrigation, or raising chickens so they can provide more of their own food and spend less buying it elsewhere.

The goal isn’t just one harvest or one meal. It’s helping people build something they can continue growing themselves. 🧡

💬 What part of food self-sustainability would you like to learn more about?

Welcome to Sierra Leone!

This October, our Country of the Month takes us to the west coast of Africa, where Sierra Leone is home to beautiful beaches, tropical forests, bustling cities, and communities with rich cultural traditions.

More than 8 million people live in Sierra Leone, with many different ethnic groups, languages, foods, music, and traditions found across the country.

And Sierra Leone is a country we know well. 🧡 Bread and Water for Africa® has worked alongside local partners there for years, supporting programs shaped by the needs of the communities they serve.

Throughout October, we’ll introduce you to the country, its culture, and some of the communities and people behind our work there.

🌍 Follow along as we explore Sierra Leone this month!
