FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 17, 2020

Athens, Georgia – The Georgia House of Representatives passed House Resolution 885, which recognizes 911 and public safety telecommunicators as first responders in Georgia. The Resolution identifies the critical roles performed, the stressful situations experienced and specialized equipment utilized by emergency communications personnel - while stating “without 9-1-1 and public safety telecommunicators adequate public safety cannot be achieved.” This Resolution ensures future policy consideration regarding first responders will include 911 and public safety telecommunicators.

It is important to recognize and thank Representatives Gullett, Hitchens, Gravely, Momtahan, and Sainz, for sponsoring this Resolution and making Georgia one of the few states to take this important step! The work performed by the men and women in public safety emergency telecommunications is outstanding and the Resolution is a great display of respect to highlight the work performed 24/7/365.

APCO has been leading the efforts to right this wrong for the last 5 years. There are companion Bills in both the House and Senate of the U.S. Congress to help correct this unfair classification and recognize 9-1-1 professionals as First Responders.

The members of Georgia APCO greatly appreciate the efforts of our State elected officials. The Georgia APCO Board of Officers will continue to strongly push efforts on garnering support for the 911 SAVES Act.

TAKE ACTION NOW: We need your help by going to www.apcointl.org/government-relations/take-action/ and filling out a form to generate an email to your U.S. Senators and Representative, asking them to co-sponsor this common sense, zero-cost bill to reclassify Public Safety Telecommunicators as Protective Service Occupations.
