National Industries for the Blind

National Industries for the Blind Despite continued gains in employment, people who are blind remain one of the nation’s greatest untapped labor resources.

NIB and its network of associated nonprofit agencies are America’s largest employer of people who are blind via the manufacture and provision of SKILCRAFT® and other products and services through the AbilityOne® Program. In fact, 70 percent of working-age Americans who are blind are not employed. This statistic fuels NIB’s mission to create, sustain and improve employment opportunities for people

who are blind. Today, NIB is not only focused on creating jobs – but on developing careers through challenging, knowledge-based positions in high-energy, quality work environments. NIB works with 100 associated nonprofit agencies based in 39 states at more than 250 locations across the United States, offering a wide range of career opportunities with no boundaries.

NIB is proud to partner with Meta and support their initiative to donate Ray-Ban Meta glasses to every blind veteran in America, https://hubs.la/Q04mb-d_0

The largest device donation in the company’s history, this groundbreaking initiative will help veterans access innovative AI-powered technology designed to support greater independence and everyday accessibility.

These smart glasses can assist with reading text, identifying objects, making hands-free calls, sending messages, connecting with Be My Eyes volunteers, and much more.

Together, we can help expand access to tools that empower veterans who are blind or have low vision to navigate daily life with greater confidence and independence.

We're so excited to share the latest episode of Heard & Empowered! https://hubs.la/Q04lZL-S0

What does it mean to turn uncertainty into leadership? In this episode, Dean Thompson sits down with Jennifer Parrish, Manager of Business Services at The Lighthouse of Houston, NIB advocate, and host of Sightless Voices: Unleashing Potential.

The Lighthouse employs people who are blind or visually impaired across a remarkable range of contracts, IRS mailrooms, a VA Medical Center switchboard, a university maintenance call center, military base postal services, and government scanning departments. These are meaningful, skilled roles serving real clients. And Parrish manages all of it.

After 23 years as a nationally certified medical transcriptionist, she was asked to step into leadership, and said yes, even though she was terrified. In this episode, she reflects on how accessible employment, assistive technology, mentorship, and the disability benefits cliff shape what career growth truly looks like for the blind community.

Let’s talk about alt text.

Alt text is a short written description of an image that helps people using screen readers understand what’s being shown. It’s a simple step that makes digital content more accessible for people who are blind, low vision or visually impaired.

When writing alt text, be clear and specific about what matters in the image, no need to overthink it.

Example:
Instead of “people in a room,” try:
“Three people seated at a table during a workshop, looking at a presentation screen.”

Small detail. Big impact. That’s .
