Dillard University proudly honors alumnus Dave Dennis, Sr., a civil rights leader whose journey into activism was shaped right here on our campus. While attending Dillard, Dennis encountered student organizers and participated in his first demonstration at a Woolworth sit-in in New Orleans—an experience that sparked a lifelong commitment to justice and equality. He later earned both his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees from Dillard University, building the academic foundation that would support his national impact.

From becoming a Freedom Rider in 1961 to serving as co-director of the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO) and helping organize the historic Mississippi Freedom Summer of 1964, Dennis worked alongside movement leaders to advance voter registration, civil rights, and social change across the South.

His legacy as a Dillard alumnus reflects the power of education, courage, and purpose-driven leadership in shaping a more just society.

When the Black woman preacher’s agency isn’t located within what’s built for her, she builds a space for it herself. A denial of a space to preach has never impeded Black women’s progression; in fact, a denial of sermonic space has made her even more determined to be fully herself and build her own pulpit of inclusivity and justice. - from Colored Women Sittin’ on High: Womanist Sermonic Practice in Literature and Music by Melanie R. Sebastien Beauzile is rewriting the future for sickle cell patients. After living with the debilitating pain and complications of sickle cell anemia for 21 years, Beauzile has become the first person in New York state to be cured of the disease. Thanks to an innovative gene therapy at Cohen Children’s Medical Center, Beauzile’s story offers new hope to thousands of people living with sickle cell disease. The treatment, Lyfgenia, involves genetically modifying a patient’s own bone marrow stem cells to produce healthy red blood cells, eliminating the sickling effect that causes pain and organ damage. For Beauzile, this groundbreaking therapy has transformed his life — his chronic pain vanished, his blood began to flow freely, and he can now live without the constant barriers his disease once imposed. This medical breakthrough marks a significant shift in the treatment of sickle cell, a condition historically managed by symptom relief rather than a cure. The hope is that this therapy will soon provide a permanent solution for many more patients, especially those in underserved communities often overlooked by clinical innovation.
