A Senate Finance Committee hearing held this past Wednesday underscored a point that lawmakers on both sides of the aisle agree on: Social Security's long-term financial challenges must be addressed. However, the discussion also revealed deep divisions over how Congress should tackle the problem and secure the program's future.

The hearing marked an early step in what is expected to be a difficult debate over strengthening the program's finances. While there was broad recognition that action is needed, senators expressed differing views on both the urgency of the problem and the best way to preserve Social Security for current and future beneficiaries.

According to the most recent report from the Social Security Board of Trustees, the program's trust funds are expected to be depleted by the end of 2032. If Congress does not act before then, Social Security would still collect enough payroll tax revenue to pay most scheduled benefits, but beneficiaries would face an automatic 22 percent benefit reduction.
