Friends of Green Spring Gardens - FROGS

Friends of Green Spring Gardens - FROGS The Friends of Green Spring (FROGS) is a non-profit (501c-3) organization that supports the educational and horticultural programs of Green Spring Gardens.

Green Spring Gardens is a "must visit" for everyone in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area. It's a year-round gold mine of information and inspiration for the home gardener. It's an outdoor classroom for children and their families to learn about plants and wildlife. It's also a museum, a national historic site that offers glimpses into a long, rich history with colonial origins. There's someth

ing here for everyone: a wooded stream valley with ponds, a naturalistic native plant garden, over 20 thematic demonstration gardens, a greenhouse filled with tropicals, and a well-stocked horticultural reference library. Visit the Garden Gate Plant Shop and our two gift shops where you'll find gift ideas ranging from books and gardening gloves to china and wind chimes. Green Spring will educate, inspire, and delight you. The gardens are always changing, so come back often for new ideas. Green Spring Gardens serves Fairfax County residents and visitors by advancing the awareness and practice of gardening. The gardens and educational programs focus on practical landscaping techniques that are appropriate for the Washington metro area. Additional programs emphasize historic influences on the land and Fairfax County residents' role in preserving cultural resources. Open to the public are a horticulture center, library, demonstration gardens, a historic landscape and buildings, and a wooded stream valley with ponds. Park grounds open from dawn to dusk.

Action in the Edible Garden at Green Spring

As summer proceeds, the result of hard work in the edible garden at Green Spring Gardens is fully demonstrated. Extension Master Gardeners were thoroughly engaged in harvesting vegetables and herbs this week – beans, cucumbers, eggplants, green and hot peppers, jalapenos, basil, and parsley. The 50 pounds of produce harvested brings the total this year to 652 pounds. All this produce is donated to a food bank to benefit local families. The Master Gardeners work in the garden every Thursday morning and are always welcoming and willing to share the knowledge they have gained. Stop by and follow their progress as the amount of harvest continues to grow each week.

In 2013, FROGS began a parking donation program to provide additional support to our Frances M. Tyler Children's Education Fund. All receipts collected from the two parking boxes located in the Green Spring Gardens parking lot are deposited into this fund, established in 2006, to subsidize the fees for students and schools with limited financial resources so that they may enjoy the many learning opportunities that Green Spring Gardens has to offer. Since its inception, FROGS members have generously funded this program.

The suggested donation per car is $3 per visit or $25 per year, requested only of those who drive to the park. Parking donations are voluntary.

Summer Activity in the Green Spring Edible Garden

Summer is always a busy time in a vegetable garden and that is certainly true for the edible garden at Green Spring managed by the Extension Master Gardeners. This week, the Master Gardeners, along with an energetic summer intern, were able to harvest a bountiful supply of peppers, beans, carrots, eggplant, and cucumbers. All the produce is donated to a local food bank to benefit area residents. The Master
Gardeners work in the edible garden every Thursday morning and welcome visitors to
discuss their work and offer vegetable gardening suggestions. Please stop by and
enjoy meeting them.
