Today, we recognize National Navajo Code Talkers Day and commemorate the extraordinary Marines whose courage, ingenuity, and service helped shape the course of our Nation's history. Using their native language to transmit secure communications during World War II, the Navajo Code Talkers played a critical role in some of the Pacific Theater's most important war operations.

As we remember the service and sacrifice of the Navajo Code Talkers, we are proud to help carry their legacy forward by supporting the next generation of leaders, including descendants of Code Talkers like Marine Scholar Elena Perez.

As the daughter of two retired veterans and the great-granddaughter of one of the 29 original Navajo Code Talkers, Elena and her family's story demonstrates how the spirit of the Navajo Code Talkers continues to inspire future generations. She says she hopes to use her fine arts degree to honor her family's legacy by integrating her Navajo heritage into her artwork and add to her family's long lineage of Indigenous artists and storytellers.
